Coterie Show Report: Print, Color and Tactile Fabrications Stand Out

Vendors and buyers attending the Coterie show in New York were focused on prints, color and textural fabrics.

The three-day trade event ended Friday at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York. While Coterie was billed as a spring 2027 show, some brands only had early spring, and others were exhibiting more of their fall lines for buyers seeking immediate deliveries.

Newness was a key theme for organizers this season. “Coterie features 146 new brands that make up approximately 23 percent of the show floor,” said Purvi Kanji, vice president of events, Coterie, Fashion by Informa. She said Coterie is now more than a trade show and has become an “ecosystem” that fosters connections between brands, buyers and industry leaders.

This season, brands from more than 30 countries made their mark, and the top categories included contemporary, premium, destination and international. Footwear, accessories and beauty are also growing categories for the show.

All told, there were 700 exhibiting brands. Retailers on the scene included Nuuly, Julian Gold, Hemline, Galeries Lafayette, Anthropologie and Nikki Beach Lifestyle.

At denim brand Mavi, low-rise jeans and wide-leg versions got the attention of buyers, according to Katie Libertelli, marketing executive. “These are easy looks with a tank top,” she noted. “They can be dressed up or down.”

A low-rise jean called “Sandy” in two leg lengths, 30 inches and 32 inches, is $118 retail. A boot-cut style called “Vicky” was a favorite of digital influencers, with a retail price point of $128.

For spring 2027, “lighter wash denims are favored,” she said. Libertelli also said a newer fabrication that was introduced in its men’s line, the Tencel French Terry, has also become a favorite of buyers.

In addition to spring, Matty M. was showing fall options for buyers looking for deliveries right away. “Satin prints, novelty and textured” were the trends noted by Lauren Carter, brand director.

Among the fall items on display were suede options in two colors, brown and fig. One was a brown suede dress that retails at $198. “Fig is popular for fall,” Carter said.

And while satin prints were what attracted buyers for the spring offerings, Carter said they were particularly interested in detailing, such as “satin with lace.”

At the leather brand Mauritius, known for its ethically and sustainably produced lambskin that’s vegetable-tanned, short jackets were what garnered the interest of buyers, according to Lyn Baskett, chief executive officer.

“It’s all about proportion,” Baskett said, explaining that with skinny jeans out of favor, the short jackets work better with high-waist pants.

The CEO said buyers in the U.S. market want color, which is different from the European trends, where shades of brown and other darker solids such as black are the preferred choices. And while European buyers choose the more traditional basics, American buyers were seeking out novelty.

“The European market is not as much as watch-me [in attitude], while in America, it’s ‘look at me.’ The [American] customer wants to be noticed,” Baskett said.

Buyers in the Desigual booth gravitated to the brand’s bold, colorful and unique prints and patchwork designs.

“People come to us for things that are different. They want hand-curated pieces that they can put in stores that pop out for attention,” said Deke Stoklosa, head of retail/wholesale, North America.

All fashion options at Desigual, whether dresses or T-shirts or accessories, have a wholesale price range from $24 for a scarf to $150 for higher-ticket items, said Nicole Lorde, corporate sales representative, North America. She said dresses are the brand’s largest category, followed by Ts and pullovers. Almost all fashion options shown at Coterie were colorful prints in bright bold colors.

According to Stoklosa, a denim-on-denim jacket and jean set that initially debuted on the brand’s wholesale site has since been expanded to wholesale after it went viral.

Resort brand Hale Bob, which is known for its prints, showed bright blues and kelly greens, as well shades of red, pink and orange.

According to Sophia Fernandez, sales executive, the brand has a wide range of maxidress options that include fabrics such as washed linen and silk linen organzas.

In terms of prints, florals were the heart of the collection, while butterflies injected a bit of fun into the look.

In addition to resortwear, the line is also popular for occasion dressing and bridal and shower options, noted Cathy Cooley, Hale Bob’s sales director.

“We sell to specialty stores and resort hotels, such as The Breakers Palm Beach and the Ocean Reef Club [in Key Largo], and in exclusive country clubs,” Cooley said. She emphasized that all the color and print combinations are trademarked to ensure a point of distinction for the brand.

At Varley, pastels — baby blue, butter yellow and soft pink — were shown as the trending color preferences for spring. “We are an elevated contemporary loungewear brand for running errands but [add some] dress up [to the look],” noted Chloe Lykken, Pacific Northwest sales representative.

One particular highlight was a viscose blend fabrication called DoubleSoft, a lighter-weight knit in a woven stretch.
