FRIGHT NIGHT: Cinephiles will surely get a charge out of Maison Margiela‘s fall campaign — up to and including its star, actress Rebecca Hall, who relished the chance to appear in a trailer for a psychological thriller.
“I liked that it was bold and original but also referential to cinema,” she told WWD. “I felt the influences of Argento, de Palma, Lynch — it felt like it was in dialogue with a lot of iconic cinema that I love.”
Hall said she also relates to the fictional film‘s title, “Anonymity,” and the plot, which has her portraying an actress forever confronting her double, masked up in typical Margiela style.
“There’s a funny war always going on between one’s identity as a figure in the public eye and one’s desire to disappear,” she said. “I liked that the film was pushing this concept to its archetypal extreme; I mean, there’s some satire in it, too — the classic Garbo line spoken seductively to camera, ‘I want to be alone.’”
The two-minute video also delivers its share of the heebie-jeebies with scenes of a bleeding television screen, clear goo spilling out of Hall’s mouth and ghostly figures seemingly stepping out of closets.
Hall’s doppelgänger wears the Artisanal masks designed for the brand’s fall show, staged last April in Shanghai amid stacks of shipping containers.
Released Wednesday, the campaign coincides with the fall 2026 collection arriving in stores and online. It also exalts the Paris-based house’s attachment to films, often with a disquieting component, such as 2021’s “A Folk Horror Tale” that showcased the Artisanal couture collection.
Perhaps best known for her roles in “The Prestige” and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” Hall has dabbled in the horror category with 2011’s “The Awakening” and 2020’s “The Night House.”
