The Honourable Mona Fortier, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, will visit Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from September 8, 2026, to September 11, 2026, for a bilateral visit centered around Canada’s engagement on the ongoing security crisis in Haiti.

The Dominican Republic is a key trade and investment partner for Canada as well as a top regional destination for Canadian tourists. While in Santo Domingo, Parliamentary Secretary Fortier will meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic, parliamentarians and Canadian companies operating in that country.

These engagements will highlight Canada’s trade and investment diversification agenda while also identifying opportunities to improve supply chain resilience. Parliamentary Secretary Fortier will also promote Canada’s sustainable economic growth throughout her exchanges and reinforce the importance of strengthening commercial ties with a key partner in Latin America.

Parliamentary Secretary Fortier will also meet with UN’s Special Representative of the Gang Suppression Force as well as other UN representatives to support and strengthen the UN’s role in Haiti.

She will meet with representatives of the Dominican Republic Tourism Police and other key security interlocutors to discuss shared challenges, including transnational crime networks and threats to regional stability. These discussions will advance Canada’s broader security and consular interests by strengthening cooperation on tourist security and supporting the safety and well-being of Canadians travelling to the Dominican Republic.
