An Amazon Prime Air-branded Boeing 767-300F went off a runway at 
Miami International Airport (MIA) on Sunday. The excursion reportedly happened shortly after the aircraft touched down.
Preliminary reports and data indicate the plane made contact with the runway at a speed of just under 200 miles per hour (173 knots), which is faster than a normal landing speed. The jet’s crash at the end of the runway triggered “heavy flames and smoke,” according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
Amazon Prime Air-Branded 767 Catches Fire After Runway Excursion
The aircraft, registered as N1997A, is leased and operated by 21 Air, an all-cargo airline based in North Carolina. According to flight data, it was operating flight 7598 from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU). The plane departed from SJU on time at 11:42 (AST). After about two hours of flying time, it landed on Runway 30 at MIA at 1:54 PM.
The pilots did not declare any issues with the aircraft or an emergency prior to landing, according to air traffic control audio obtained by CNN. Flight data indicates that the plane touched down at a speed of 196 miles per hour (170 knots) and was still traveling at around 130 miles per hour (112 knots) when it overran the runway. The normal landing speed for a 767-300F is typically between 135 and 140 knots. It is unclear why the aircraft landed faster than normal.
The aircraft caught fire after the runway excursion, prompting more than 60 rescue units to be deployed to the scene. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue confirmed the incident in a statement at around 3:30 PM and said that firefighters were still attempting to extinguish the fire.
“Over 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units are on scene of an incident involving a plane that overran a runway and struck multiple vehicles near Miami International Airport. Units arrived to find an airplane that had caught on fire as a result of this crash, with heavy flames and smoke showing. Firefighters are working on extinguishing the fire and assessing patients.”
