Sources point towards Parsons’ next project being a sequel to his indie success

Dread Central reports that a sequel to Backrooms is in the works and that Kane Parsons has been signed as director. According to the horror media outlet, fans can expect an announcement soon.

Backrooms 2 is reportedly coming soon

Backrooms was born from a picture of a strange, liminal space that caught the eye of Kane Parsons, who then turned it into a horror web series on YouTube that went viral. This led A24 to pick up the project and turn it into an indie horror film, which was directed by the YouTuber himself. The movie proved just as popular as the web series, as Backrooms grossed nearly $400 million globally — about 40 times its production budget.

In an interview with Variety back in May, director Kane Parsons hinted at a possible sequel: “Backrooms has always been planned to be more of a series that goes outside the confines of this film…I’ve got a contract, and I got a hold at my end, and that means I am definitely not done with Backrooms.” It now seems that the sequel might be moving forward sooner than anyone expected. Dread Central says that “an official announcement is imminent” and that it has confirmation that “Backrooms 2 will be Parsons’ next movie.”

In June, entertainment industry insider Jeff Sneider claimed that Kane Parsons was working on a new project with Backrooms producer Osgood Perkins. At the time, there were very few details, so it was unknown if this meant a sequel to A24’s horror success or something entirely different. With Dread Central’s exclusive claims, the former appears to be the more likely scenario.

The report indicates that development plans for the sequel will be announced soon, so fans will have to hold on tight while they wait for official news. Parsons has explained the ending of Backrooms, but there is still plenty of lore that can be introduced in future titles and more questions that need answers. Hopefully, all of this will be unpacked in this sequel and beyond.
