You like putting a bunch of mice on a boat, don’t you? Of course you do, it’s always enjoyable seeing semi-anthropomorphic mice do human things! Now that we’re on the same page, this is a good time to let you know that the new update for Whiskerwood, a city-builder where the cities are filled with mice ruled by nasty, greedy cats, has received a new update today where the friendly rodents can venture out to sail the seven seas.

Appropriately titled the Nautical Update, this one’s all about boats, boat battles, ships, shipyards, trading, and more. As explained in a Steam blog post, the devs over at Minakata Dynamics consider this to be the second act of the game, the first act being the inhabitants of your city coming to terms with living under the rule of those aforementioned cats, the Claws. Prior to this update you were just focused on the one little island you inhabited, but now you’ll be able to go out and see the world.

“In doing so, you’ll encounter Pirates, whose threat slowly wears away at the Claw’s colony system,” the blog post explains. “These lawless Pirates smuggle and pillage from the Colonies and challenge the Claw’s nautical supremacy. Either willingly or by force, your actions will feed the pirates. In turn, the Pirate Wars will bring the Claws to acts of desperation, acts which will grant you the schematics to outfit a navy!”

Getting the map is quite literal, as the whole thing shows you a 2D, grid-based map where you choose where you want your ships to go. Along the way you can take part in battles, or you can fish, and on certain islands you’ll be able to trade goods to build up your personal supply of resources. On top of this, “keeping your crew alive is vital, as not just any Whisker can crew a ship. Only Whiskers with the new skills of Sailor or Officer can set sail. Larger ships require Officers & Sailors, while smaller ships can make do with only Sailors.”

Plus on top of this, your home island can get attacked too, so you need to be prepared to defend it while you’re out on your adventures. A fairly hefty sounding update! And the game’s 50% off for a little while too, so, can’t go wrong really. You can check it out on Steam here.
