This week Egidio asked us to share images that seem over the top for the Lens-Artist Challenge. At first, I was stumped and thought I might pass on this week’s challenge, but then I remembered the Exquisite Creatures exhibit.
A couple of years ago, Christopher Marley’s Exquisite Creatures exhibit came to Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, AR. The exhibit was absolutely stunning, filled with a rainbow of colors and creatures. Christopher Marley is an artist and naturalist who created this traveling exhibit to present nature as art. It features a dazzling variety of creatures and colors. The displays present a variety of animals, plants, and minerals arranged in geometric patterns. The show is designed to spark wonder, curiosity, and a fresh perspective of nature.
During the show I learned that beetles are the most abundant animal species on earth, with about 400,000 known species. They represent 25% of all species and about 40% of the insects. Scientists estimate there are probably 1.5 million beetle species! Beetles dominate and yet I don’t see that many beetles in my daily life. Do you?

The abundance of taxidermy was a bit overwhelming, but I was happy to learn Christopher focuses on ethical harvesting from zoos, museums, and sustainable methods. Overall, it was a kaleidoscope of colors, creatures, and definitely over the top. And I would still recommend going if the show comes near you.
