Arc’teryx’s ‘System 0’ Advances the Brand’s Circularity Goals

Arc’teryx Equipment, the technical high-performance apparel and equipment brand, is recasting traditional product design and manufacturing into a more circular process. Called “System 0,” the company describes it as a new framework “that reimagines how products can be designed, manufactured, used, repaired and ultimately regenerated.”

The company said in a statement that System 0 represents the next evolution “for sustainability in the outdoor industry, as it embeds circular thinking across an entire product lifecycle while maintaining the uncompromising performance standards that define the Arc’teryx brand.”

First up in the framework is Sperro SV jacket, which is a multisport hardshell designed for durability and repairability as well as disassembly at end of life, which the brand said is the stage that has “traditionally been the greatest challenge to circular design.”

The jacket is constructed with Gore-Tex Pro Fabric and features the “ePE membrane.” Arc’teryx said the Sperro SV jacket was developed with Gore-Tex testing expertise and is made to meet Gore-Tex’s durable waterproof, windproof and breathable performance standards.

The brand said Sperro SV’s nylon face fabric and backer are separately designed for recyclability and are made in partnership with Aquafil, the maker of Econyl regenerated nylon.

The jacket is available Sept. 4 in its stores or on arcteryx.com.

Arc’teryx’s said the Sperro SV is its most advanced hardshell jacket. It succeeds in the brand’s goal to prove that a circular approach “can be integrated into technical apparel without compromising the greatest standards for performance.”

Stuart Haselden, chief executive officer of Arc’teryx said System 0 represents a fundamental shift in how the brand build and scale its business with circularity at the forefront. “For decades, Arc’teryx has built gear that’s meant to be repaired, not replaced,” Haselden said. “This is the next step forward. System 0 challenges us to consider the entire process of creating products so they can remain in use longer and ultimately be regenerated into something new.”

The CEO said the brand’s vision is a future “where gear doesn’t end up in landfills but instead continues to have a purpose beyond its first life. Today moves us closer to that vision.”

The brand said the jacket is the first product to be certified by Testex Circularity, a standard Arc’teryx co-piloted as part of its work in circular product standards. Arc’teryx said the certification surpassed its own expectations.

System 0 approach builds on Arc’teryx’s existing ecosystem of wash, repair, trade-in, resale and upcycle. The company said the Sperro SV jacket has been tested by alpine professionals, including the search and rescue teams from Vancouver’s North Shore Rescue.

Katie Becker, chief creative officer of Arc’teryx, said the brand designs products to perform for the long term. “System 0 asks us to think even bigger,” Becker said. “It represents a mindset shift for our entire design team and a powerful evolution in how we innovate. We deliberately started with one of the hardest problems—a hardshell, the most complex product we make. If we can solve circularity here, we believe we can apply what we learn across our entire system. And we know we’re just getting started.”
