Popular livestreaming platform Twitch suffered a major outage soon after the premiere of the Grand Theft Auto 6 extended look on Netflix.

The gameplay presentation, which was available to co-stream by content creators, was being reacted to live by top streamers including Kai Cenat and IShowSpeed the moment it went live on Netflix. This allowed many Twitch users to watch it without having to pay for a Netflix subscription.

Looking at the Twitch Status website, which monitors the status of the various Twitch systems at any given time, we see multiple major outages affecting the web, chat, and video functionality on the website. Looking at Twitch now, it appears that the website has recovered for the most part thankfully, though the major outage warnings persist nonetheless. As of writing, roughly 180,000 people are watching Grand Theft Auto 6 live streams on the website, and 80,000 are watching Grand Theft Auto 5.

Twitch has stated on this page that it is investigating the issue. The statement reads: “We have received reports of impacted services. This could manifest in chat not working, login difficulties, search impaired, etc. We’re looking into the issue.” It has not confirmed explicitly this outage was due to excessive strain during the Grand Theft Auto 6 extended look.

Eurogamer has contacted a PR representative for comment on whether this Twitch outage was caused by high user activity brought on during the Grand Theft Auto 6 extended look. We have not received a response at the time of writing.
