  • ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ has been renewed for Season 2 at HBO Max.
  • The season will be set in 1935.
  • There’s no word on a new cast yet.

It’s perhaps not the most surprising news that ‘IT: Welcome to Derry,’ the TV series which broadened the horror-flavored world adapted from Stephen King’s novel, and enjoyed both positive critical notices and healthy viewing figures on HBO Max, has been renewed for a second season.

The show, which will see co-showrunner Brad Kane stepping up to oversee it solo, features a new time period (more on that below). And executive producer/’IT’ filmmaker Andy Muschietti is also returning behind the scenes.

We don’t yet know who will be taking the lead roles in the show going forward, but we’d expect to see Bill Skarsgård back as the child-consuming, clown-shaped nasty that repeatedly plagues the titular town.

‘IT: Welcome To Derry’ is based on Stephen King’s ‘IT’ novel and expands the vision established by filmmaker Muschietti in the feature films ‘IT’ and ‘IT Chapter Two.’

Season two takes place in 1935 during the Great Depression and centers on the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry to buy ammo and end up facing unimaginable horror.

‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ Season 2 renewal: the filmmakers talk

Here’s what Andy Muschietti and producer sister Barbara had to say about the new season:

“Continuing to explore and expand on the amazing world Stephen King created is an absolute privilege. The support of our partners at HBO and Warner Bros. Television is priceless. Boy do we love our jobs!”
