RETAIL REGRETS: JCPenney has a new incentive to shop its stores — donate an item of clothing for a good cause and get $15 off a $50 transaction.
From Aug. 28 through Aug. 30, Penney’s will have large bins in all of its 640 stores around the U.S. to collect unwanted or used garments in exchange for the $15 coupon. All collected items will be given to Good 360, a major nonprofit organization that gathers excess inventory and returned goods from retailers and manufacturers and distributes the items to nonprofits to support communities in need. Penney’s is calling the three-day program the “Retail Regrets Trade-in.”
According to Michelle Wlazlo, Penney’s chief executive officer, people have items in their closets that they regret buying in the first place or no longer wear. “So often many people shopping at other stores buy things that aren’t right, whether it wasn’t the right fit, or they regretted how much they spent, whatever the case may be,” said Wlazlo. “And so, at the end of this month, we’re saying, ‘We know you have retail regrets. Bring them in, and see what we carry. You’ll be surprised to see how many sizes we offer, that we have such incredible quality in fashion, and that our prices are so affordable. We put the value into it.”
Penney’s personnel won’t be scrutinizing what people drop off, but Wlazlo expressed hope that the clothes being donated aren’t decrepit or dirty. “People are going to bring in what they’re going to bring in, but we are saying to customers or potential new customers, bring in those things that you regret. We’re saying, you may not know what JCPenney looks like today, or it’s OK that you haven’t been here in a while and you’ve been shopping at other stores. But come into Penney’s, take a peek, and we’re so confident you’re going to find something here.”
Along with the “No Regrets” deal, “We’re always going to have sales,” Wlazlo said. “We’re in retail, but this will be on top of those.” In other words, shoppers could apply the $15 off “No Regrets” coupon to items already discounted, creating a very deep discount.
