Live Updates: Inflation Was Moderate in July, but Energy Prices Remain Elevated

Today’s inflation report reflects the extent to which the war with Iran continues to keep prices elevated compared to last year, especially at the gas pump. But the White House nonetheless tried to emphasize some of the more recent improvements in the July data.

Take grocery prices, which fell over the month, yet are up 2.7 percent from a year ago. Kush Desai, a White House spokesman, touted that prices for meat had “cooled” in July and eggs and other essentials “remain low.”
