A man long sought by the authorities in Ireland on suspicion of links to organized crime appeared in a Dublin criminal court on Sunday following his extradition from the United Arab Emirates.

The defendant, Daniel Kinahan, has been accused of running a crime ring known as the Kinahan Cartel, which was founded by his father, Christy Kinahan, a convicted drug trafficker.

His extradition “sends a clear message that suspected perpetrators of serious and organized crime will find no safe haven from justice, ” Ireland’s justice minister, Jim O’Callaghan, said on social media.

Mr. Kinahan was flown from the U.A.E. on Sunday on an Irish government jet. Upon his arrival, he was taken directly from an airport south of Dublin to the court, the country’s public broadcaster RTE reported.

He told the court that he had not had time to make arrangements for legal representation and that he had been held in isolation in Dubai since Friday.

Mr. Kinahan was charged with directing a criminal organization from 2015 and 2017 and remanded into custody, RTE reported. He was ordered to appear before the court again in early October.

Mr. Kinahan, 49, was at one time best known outside Ireland for his deep influence in boxing. In 2012, he founded MTK Global, a boxing and mixed martial arts company that represented top British boxers.

About a decade later, the United States put out a reward of $5 million for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Mr. Kinahan, his father and his brother Christy Jr. The United States also announced financial sanctions against the Kinahans, other members of their group and a number of connected businesses. Among them was a sports management company based in the United Arab Emirates, where Mr. Kinahan had taken up residence.

The U.S. State Department said at the time that the family had built an extensive and diverse criminal network.

“After initially distributing South American cocaine and heroin in Ireland, the Kinahans later expanded their narcotics trafficking organization to include the United Kingdom and then throughout mainland Europe,” the State Department said in a statement. “In addition to narcotics trafficking, the Kinahans have engaged in money laundering, firearms trafficking, and murder.”

MTK Global, which was not subject to sanctions by the U.S. government, repeatedly said it had cut ties with Mr. Kinahan. The action followed a shooting in 2016 at the Regency Hotel in Dublin that the Irish national police described as a pivotal moment in its understanding of the Kinahans. Investigators said at the time that they had come to view it as a “transnational organized crime group,” as opposed to a merely local criminal ring.

Mr. Kinahan was arrested in Dubai in April under the terms of a 2024 extradition agreement between the U.A.E. and Ireland. He is the second person to have been extradited under that agreement.

In May 2025, Sean McGovern, a senior member of the Kinahan cartel, was extradited to Ireland from the U.A.E. and in June he was sentenced to 24 years in prison after pleading guilty to two charges related to directing a criminal organization.

Mr. O’Callaghan, the Irish justice minister, commended the U.A.E.’s handling of the extradition request.
