With 12 Airbus A380s, British Airways is the world’s joint-second-largest operator of the superjumbo. In the upcoming winter season, BA’s double-decker activity is down by 28% compared to last winter. This is primarily due to removing aircraft from service to reconfigure them with just 421 seats.

Ch-aviation shows that BA’s first A380 was delivered more than 13 years ago, in July 2013. Since then, all 12 examples have had 469 seats. But that will now change, with the type becoming increasingly more premium. It’ll combine a very high capacity with many more seats in business class and far fewer seats in economy, which will dictate where it is deployed from London Heathrow Airport (LHR).

BA Cuts 28% Of A380 Flights For Winter

Between November 2026 and February 2027, the oneworld member’s schedule submission to Cirium Diio shows five daily departures on the A380 from LHR. Only four routes will see the type, as summarized in the following table. The equipment returned to Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) on September 6, 2026, having last been flown to Sin City in May 2025. Singapore Airlines has a twice-daily superjumbo service between SIN and LHR.

Compared to November 2025 to February 2026, BA’s A380 offering has been reduced by 28%. In that period, the type was deployed to Dubai International Airport (DXB), Johannesburg’s O. R. Tambo International Airport (JNB), Los Angeles International Airport(LAX), Miami International Airport (MIA), San Francisco International Airport (SFO), and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD; until November 7, 2025, only). At the time, JNB and MIA had two daily departures. Now only MIA does.

BA Falls To The World’s Sixth-Largest A380 User By Flights Operated

Let’s stick with November 2026 to February 2027. In this period, BA now plans 600 departures on the A380 from LHR, for an average of five daily outbound services. This means that it is now the sixth-largest superjumbo user in this sense, as shown below. It has fallen three places compared to the same months in 2025/2026. Do not misunderstand. This is just a temporary situation.

The change means that BA will now account for just 4% of the world’s A380 activity, down by two percentage points year-over-year. The relatively tiny figures are, of course, massively influenced by the dominance of Emirates, which has seven in ten A380 services because of its 116-strong subfleet. If the Gulf giant is stripped out, BA’s share of the remaining nine operators’ superjumbo flights has fallen from 17% to 13%.

The A380 Will Now Have 6% Of BA’s Widebody Flights From LHR

When all equipment is included, BA plans an average of 329 daily departures from LHR between November 2026 and February 2027. Widebody aircraft will operate 83 of them (25%). While not a like-for-like comparison, this is 1% lower than for Air France from Paris CDG, but 11% higher than for KLM from Amsterdam and 9% more than for Lufthansa from Frankfurt.

BA’s widebody fleet consists of the A350-1000, A380, 787-8, 787-9, 787-10, 777-200ER, and 777-300ER. Given the carrier has now scheduled five daily superjumbo departures, the type will only operate about one in 17 of the carrier’s twin-aisle services from LHR. It has fallen from one in every 12 departures.
