Gage Ziehl’s stuff continues to have the potential to make an impact at the major league level.

Right now, the Boston Red Sox have the right-handed pitching prospect at Double-A Portland, where he threw a gem on Sunday.
Ziehl was perfect through three innings and left after five scoreless frames. He struck out eight.
His breaking ball was working with some filthy downward tilt, and coming off a strong June, Ziehl bounced back from a rough last time on the mound to put up these zeroes:

The Red Sox sought Ziehl out this offseason, sending Jordan Hicks to the Chicago White Sox to get him.
He had already been dealt once, at last season’s trade deadline, when the New York Yankees sent him to the White Sox for Austin Slater.

Ziehl is likely hoping the only moving he does now is potentially up to Worcester and then maybe to Boston.
He was a closer for much of his college career with the Miami Hurricanes, so the bullpen is always a possibility. But teams don’t rush guys out of the rotation.
If Ziehl keeps having starts like this on the mound, he’ll keep getting chances.
Boston’s MLB club is on fire, which starts to make minor league depth even more important. Ziehl probably won’t reach the majors this season, but if players in front of him move up, he might get to head to Triple-A before long.
With Worcester, Ziehl could even get a chance to pitch back home when they hit the road to play at Triple-A Rochester.

But regardless of what comes next for Ziehl, it’s clear right now that he’s dialed in and dominant, and the Red Sox have to love to see that.
