What’s happening on (and off) Parliament Hill, plus the news you need to start your day.
A trio of Team Carney front benchers will fan out across the country to meet with their respective provincial and territorial counterparts today, starting with Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne, who will spend his second — and final — day in Charlottetown ensconced in high-level closed-door talks with his fellow finance ministers that, according to Champagne’s office, will focus on “key common objectives, including affordability, housing and Canada’s long-term economic growth,” with a joint media availability to follow this afternoon. (2:30 p.m. AT)
Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald is booked in for a three-day visit to Halifax to “discuss issues affecting (Canadian agriculture” and set priorities for the year ahead,” according to a social media post from his department.
Rounding out the roster, Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin and her Alberta counterpart, Grant Hunter, will co-host a meeting of the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment in Calgary that, according to an advisory put out by Hunter’s office, will focus on “practical ways to support economic growth while maintaining strong environmental standards that protect Canada’s air, land and water.”
Elsewhere on the ministerial circuit: Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon heads to Trois-Rivières, Que., to share the details of fresh federal funding for “over 60 Quebec organizations implementing artificial intelligence-related projects,” with local Liberal MPs Carlos Leitão and Caroline Desrochers also expected to make an appearance at the midday event. (12:30 p.m.)
Also on the radar:
- Green Party leader Elizabeth May joins B.C. Green MLA Jeremy Valeriote, past federal Green candidate Andrew Robinson, and “local Green supporters,” including University of B.C. law student Max Wilkinson, in Vancouver’s Waterfront Park to reveal who will be carrying the party banner in what the advisory notes is the “yet to be announced by-election” in North Vancouver — Capilano, the now-vacant riding previously held by now former Liberal MP and one-tine natural resources minister Jonathan Wilkinson, who resigned his seat in June after being appointed to serve as Canada’s ambassador to the European Union. (10 a.m. PT)
- Conservative House leader Andrew Scheer teams up with his party’s justice critic, Arpan Khanna, for a mid-morning media availability in Regina. (11:30 a.m. CT)
Back in the capital, the Assembly of First Nations wraps up its three-day annual general meeting with another round of voting on resolutions, which will be followed by plenary sessions on the upcoming First Nations – First Ministers summit, child welfare and health, as well as an afternoon discussion on “housing, strategy and infrastructure” with Indigenous Services Minister Mandy Gull-Masty, who is listed as a “special guest speaker.” (4:15 p.m.)
