RuneScape revamps its housing customisation with a snazzy looking build mode and the option to make your own neighbourhood with your pals

RuneScape is having a bit of a home improvement moment, quite literally. An update went live yesterday that focused completely on player-owned housing, revamping how you both use and construct it, bringing it honestly quite close to The Sims in how it handles house building, amongst other tweaks and additions.

First up is that revamped building mode. You can essentially mix and match building layouts as you like, with prefab rooms that you can connect to make some fairly unique looking spaces. You’re able to freely place furniture wherever you like too, and there’s apparently more than 650 bits to decorate your home with overall. Crafting items for your home will be a big part of it too, with recipes unlockable through quests and other means; the construction skill has been expanded to level 120 as well.

A big part of this customisation is making your in-game house somewhere you actually want to spend time in. This means that you can put in things like a potion cauldron, gilded altars, combat practice devices, storage options, and other useful bits like that. Your achievements might feel a little more meaningful now too, as you’ll have the ability to display various bits of loot like your weapons, boss trophies, archaeological finds and the like.

Lastly, there’s the new Homestead system. This essentially lets you build your home on a big plot of land with up to four other people. A little neighbourhood, perhaps even commune depending on how much you like your friends. You’re also able to use one another’s facilities, so you could be the potion person, and your friend could be the chef, for example. It’s quite cute! And feels reflective of the way that people engage online socially. In any case, the update is available in RuneScape right now.
