United Airlines is the second-largest operator between the US and Australia/New Zealand. In the 12 months to March 2026, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) shows that the carrier transported 850,000 round-trip passengers and had a quarter of the market. It was United’s most traffic to date.
The
Star Alliance member had nine routes Down Under in this period. They included
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Adelaide Airport (ADL), which launched in December 2025. This was the first scheduled operation between North America and South Australia.
United From SFO To ADL
Many new routes are supported by financial incentives or other risk-sharing agreements. Given a wide range of options to deploy highly expensive aircraft, which are obviously extremely movable assets, they are perhaps especially important for brand-new airport pairs, such as SFO to ADL, which have not been served before.
The risk of launching such flights is high, so the need for support. While the details are unknown, United secured funding from the Government of South Australia, and possibly other sources, to help with this route. The aim will be to more than recoup the cost through more visitors and freight, both benefiting from easier and quicker trips.
The purpose of the support is not just to secure a route in the first place, but also to share the burden, especially in the first few years. This is perhaps particularly important for United’s new SFO-ADL market, which Cirium Diio data shows operated between December 11, 2025, and March 26, 2026, in the first season. A three-weekly service on the Boeing 787-9 was available, with flights timed at up to 15 hours and 55 minutes.

Barely Half Of The Seats Were Filled In The First Season
Despite financial support, routes can take time to develop, especially if they’re brand-new and ultra-long-haul. As such, it is important to not necessarily read too much into initial performance. However, unusually poor results can speak volumes, as in the case of SFO-ADL. The US DOT shows that United carried 11,778 round-trip passengers but filled just 52.7% of the available seats.
The load factor, which is only one performance measure, varied widely by the month. It usually does. The best result was in December 2025 (68.5%), which was influenced by higher demand due to it being Christmastime. The worst result was in February 2026 (only 33.7%), which is a low-demand period for travel to/from Australia. February is also one of the hardest months for airlines generally.
The directionality of a route can also be important, both generally and at specific times. In this airport pair’s case, the DOT shows that where passengers originated (the US or Australia) was virtually identical. However, on average, more seats were filled from ADL (54.6%) than from SFO (52.2%). The gap was much more substantial for certain months. For example, while only 39.6% of seats from SFO to ADL were filled in March 2026 (going into winter Down Under), it was 67.0% for those flying to North America (going into summer).

United Has Changed The Operating Period For The Second Season
It is not unusual to make changes to a route, including the operating period. This may mean flights operate for less of the year, with less available capacity. By focusing on more important periods, multiple things (traffic, loads, and yields, and more) should increase. Combined with the financial support, this may help to keep the link for longer.
SFO-ADL is no exception. United’s schedule update over the weekend shows that the operating period will be much shorter in the second season. Flights will leave California on December 17, 2026, with the final departure from SFO departing on January 30, 2027.
Still served three times a week flights on the 787-9, it’ll operate for just six weeks, which is extraordinarily short for such an operation. The schedule, shown below, is designed for connectivity. Booking data for the first season suggests that most people transferred to another flight in SFO, with New York, Los Angeles, London, Washington DC, and Denver being the five most popular cities.
