Official: Geovany Quenda completes Chelsea move from Sporting CP

Geovany Quenda has arrived at Chelsea, nearly 16 months after the agreement to sign him was made official with Sporting CP. Per the terms of that agreement, Quenda spent all of last season with Sporting still, before making the move to England. That move is now officially official, with the 19-year-old announced by Chelsea earlier today, just ahead of the start of preseason preparations this week.

(Part of that agreement was also the signing of Dário Essugo, who joined Chelsea straight away last summer. The total combined fee was nearly €75m, with a little over €50m assigned to the Quenda transfer.)

Quenda had been with Sporting since age 12, and was a key part of their first-team the last two seasons — including during their title-winning campaign two seasons ago. Sporting finished second this past season, with Quenda scoring six goals in 32 appearances in all competitions, playing mostly as a right winger. He’s quite capable on both wings however, and can also be utilized as a wing-back. He missed a bit of time in the second half of the season with a metatarsal fracture, but has now fully recovered.

The Portugal U21 international has signed an 8-year contract with the Blues, good through 2034. So he’s still just a baby, though one with nearly 100 senior professional appearances under his belt already.

“It feels great to be here. Chelsea is a great team and I am excited to play here at Stamford Bridge. The club has shown faith in players like me and I am proud to be here, proud to be part of this club.

“I am excited to work with my team-mates and the Manager, Xabi Alonso. I’m a very hard-working young person and I like to help my team. I want to be someone known for having the right mentality to help my team-mates and who does their best for the club to win trophies.”
