Manitoba premier urges caution as floods bring evacuation orders, states of emergency

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew says he’s urging caution as flooding in northwestern parts of his province prompts some local states of emergency and evacuation orders.

Officials with the City of Dauphin say roughly 115 millimetres of rain has fallen since Sunday and has caused, among other things, widespread flooding.

In Swan River, about 194 kilometres west of Dauphin, officials have issued mandatory evacuation orders for some parts of town due to rapidly increasing water levels.

Kinew says those in the Parkland region of the province should stay off the roads, even if they look safe to drive on, as the situation can change quickly.

At a news conference, the premier showed pictures of severely washed-out roads and bridges.

Kinew says everything is being done to provide medical care for those in need, saying patients from the Dauphin Regional Health Centre are being airlifted to facilities elsewhere.

“We are doing everything we can to keep these patients and their family members up to speed (on) where they are going to be transported to and when,” he told a news conference Wednesday.
