How AI is Revolutionizing Retail: Trends Reshaping Commerce

A report on technology trends from JPMorganChase paints a picture where AI is rapidly changing the entire business landscape—from online shopping and inventory management to how products designed and sourced.

With shopping, authors of the report said the digital storefront is being completely rewritten by agentic browsers that act as autonomous intermediaries, which is reshaping how global commerce functions.

Instead of consumers clicking through dozens of product links, filling out forms or comparing freight rates manually, intelligent digital agents now interpret user intent to execute complex, multi-step workflows. These systems use “persistent memory” and “advanced inference optimization techniques” such as continuous batching with protocols to browse, decide and purchase entirely on behalf of the shopper.

For retailers and consumer brands, the classic digital marketing playbook is officially outdated. Success now hinges on Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) instead of SEO. Brands must shift from convincing human shoppers to influencing the algorithmic data signals that autonomous agents use to make purchasing decisions, the report noted.

Behind these changes, the report’s authors said there’s a multi-year infrastructure overhaul that directly impacts the economics of retail supply chains. The explosion of AI production workloads has pushed data science communities and cloud providers to aggressively adopt open-source architectures such as Linux and Kubernetes to scale their operations efficiently.

The report said that advanced inference engines optimize hardware resources by reusing computational memory, which significantly drives down the cost of running complex AI models. For businesses in the sourcing industry, this infrastructure maturation is a major win. It means that deep-learning supply chain models, predictive inventory tools and automated vendor matching platforms are suddenly becoming vastly cheaper, more resilient and highly scalable to deploy.

Meanwhile, to keep pace with this software revolution, physical infrastructure is rapidly evolving through an unprecedented wave of investment. High-density data centers are reshaping energy markets, forcing tech giants into fierce competition for power through novel sources such as small modular nuclear reactors. These power sources are being planned across the U.S. and many communities are pushing back. The reactors are also planned for other countries. Earlier this week, Holtec and EDF submitted a proposal to build up to four reactors in the U.K.

Simultaneously, custom silicon chips designed specifically for cost-effective inference are gaining major traction, decentralizing computing power out to edge devices closer to factories and distribution hubs.

Sourcing businesses and global brands must prepare for a landscape where real-time, automated logistics decision-making happens instantly at the edge. Those who succeed will be the businesses that seamlessly integrate their product data into this hyper-optimized, agent-driven infrastructure.
