By Jeremy Valeriote, BC Green Party MLA:
On July 1, BC Hydro is changing the way it pays for power generated from household solar, and we’re not happy about it.
Under the current system, BC Hydro gives you a free kilowatt of power later, in return for every excess kilowatt your panels send to the grid. Starting July 1, BC Hydro will pay you LESS for solar you generate, compared to the amount they bill for power you use.
The BC NDP say we need every source of clean electricity we can get. But when homeowners step up and invest in rooftop solar, they’re rewarded with lower compensation for the power they provide to the grid.
Why is this government subsidizing LNG corporations while penalizing British Columbians who invest their own money in clean energy? It’s sending the wrong signal at a time when we desperately need to expand clean electricity.
