Roberta Moretti, Brazil’s trailblazing women’s cricketer, retires from internationals

Former Brazil captain Roberta Moretti has retired from international cricket, drawing curtains on a 13-year career. She played 68 T20Is, the most for Brazil, scoring 1278 runs and picking up 33 wickets.

“It has been a long journey. We had a lot of tears but now I feel the moment is right,” Moretti said in a video on Instagram. “Since I started playing cricket in 2013, my dream was to represent the Brazilian national team. When I started playing for Brazil, my dream was to win championships. When we started winning, my dream turned out to be about not just winning but winning with clear values, a purpose and that we could be better people through sport. I have given this game everything, but cricket gave me more.”

Beyond those numbers, though, Moretti truly blazed a train for women’s cricket in Brazil and currently serves as Cricket Brasil’s president. Her enthusiasm for the sport started with playing soft-ball cricket before fully transitioning to leather ball in 2013. She made her debut for Brazil in March 2014 in the South American Championship in Lima, much before they had secured international status.

Moretti also captained Brazil 33 times in T20Is before stepping down in 2023. Under her captaincy, Brazil won the South American Women’s Championship two times in three editions between 2018 and 2023. She also led them in the Women’s T20 World Cup Americas Region Qualifier in 2021 and 2023. Moretti was among the first batch of 14 players to receive central contracts from Cricket Brazil in January 2020, much before the contracts were drawn for men’s cricket there.

“It was never only about a sport; it was always about growing as people,” Moretti said. “I am thrilled with every achievement for Cricket Brazil from the time we were just playing South American tournaments when we needed to sell raffles and pizzas to fundraise and compete to know where we are in an Olympic sport. Every story has a cycle, and every cycle has an ending.

“Talking to people in the last few months, I have a lot of respect, care and gratitude for everything that cricket has given me and I can say I have made this decision with peace in my heart.”

After quitting captaincy, Moretti continued to play while also teaching cricket to schoolkids. She gradually also made a transition into administration. Moretti was appointed president of Cricket Brazil in June 2025, a role she juggled while actively playing. Her last innings in international cricket was an unbeaten 41 off 49 balls in the ongoing Kwibuka Women’s T20 Tournament in Rwanda, where Brazil have four wins in seven matches. She retires as one of only two Brazil women with 1000-plus T20I runs.

“I’ll continue to work in cricket on the other side, so that more people have the opportunity I had to wear the Brazil jersey, play the sport they love and become better people and leaders so that they can carry Cricket Brazil with the same pride I carried in my heart for years. The most important thing in all of this is that I leave cricket still loving the game.”
