United Airlines flight 404 departed
Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) at 6:17 PM on Sunday, June 14, but instead of touching down at
Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) a couple of hours later, the plane was stranded overnight in Washington, DC. The jet was diverted to Washington Dulles International Airport(IAD), where it attempted to wait out thunderstorms at the Final Destination to no avail.
At roughly 3:00 AM, passengers reported on social media that the pilot timed out on his duty day by one minute and was forced to bring the plane back to the gate before taking off. The travelers, including World Cup Sports analysts, reported being stuck at the airport for hours in the middle of the night with no lodging options provided by United.
UA404’s Dilemma: Diverted To DC
Landon Donovan, former professional soccer player and Fox Sports 2026 World Cup analyst, has been in a public spat with the airline following the disastrous Journey. Ian Darke, a famed play-by-play soccer sportscaster from the United Kingdom, was also aboard the aircraft and condemned the handling of the flight by United. The two iconic World Cup commentators, along with the football statistician accompanying them, were ultimately forced to rent a car to complete their trip, according to NST.
The aircraft did not depart from Dulles until 8:10 AM the next morning, over 14 hours after the Boeing 737 MAX 9originally departed from Texas. Its arrival time in Newark was more than 11 hours later than the initial scheduled time, as shown by Flightradar24 data. Darke posted scathing comments in the wake of the travel nightmare, saying on X that passengers would “think twice about using that airline again… I’ve been traveling 100k miles/year since I was 16, and this was easily the worst travel experience of my life.”
United reached out through X to Donovan after he recounted the experience in a series of posts. He responded with this statement:
“People want transparency and accountability, so we’re going to do this right here in public. You can start by apologizing to all impacted and then reimburse them all of their expenses with extra flight credit/money for the trouble caused.”

No Time For Delay On The World Cup Circuit
Darke and Donovan had provided sports commentary for the match between Mexico and South Africa in Mexico City last Thursday before arriving in Houston to analyze the game between Germany and Curacao. They were making the trip to New Jersey ahead of the next match that the two iconic football players will sportscast between France and Senegal, taking place in East Rutherford.
Donovan is the all-time leading goalscorer for the US soccer team and is responsible for one of the most iconic moments in the history of American footballers during the stoppage-time win against Algeria in 2010, according to NST. Darke was actually one of the sportscasters that covered that very game for ESPN nd provided analysis during the 2024 European Championships for Fox, but is legendary for his work with Sky and TNT in the UK.

American Airlines Maintenance Technician Climbs Through Window After Pilots Locked Out Of Cockpit
An unusual issue delays push back.
Letter Of The Law: 14 CFR Part 117
Federal Aviation Administration enforces strict compliance with limits to Pilot Duty days for the safety of flight across the Nation. Because the pilot of UA404 exceeded illegally permitted flight duty. For his day, 14 CFR Part 117 prohibited him from continuing to operate the aircraft. This is not an interpretable form of guidance, rather a red line that was created to prevent tragic accidents due to Pilot fatigue.
Although a one-minute time-out seems excessive and bureaucratic, there is no grace period when it comes to the FDP limit under the FAA. While the incident on Sunday sparked backlash, the legal cause stems from lessons ‘Written in Blood’ and is based on the well-documented history of flying mishaps around the world directly caused by overworked Pilots.
The plane was already on the runway, fully fueled, with the destination just a short flight away. Returning to the gate added hours of guaranteed delay, which seems counterproductive to getting people home safely. The rule does not care if the pilot feels perfectly awake, has drunk three coffees, or wants to get home to their own bed. The duty clock overrides human judgment and every other external Factor, regardless of extenuating circumstances.
