Singapore Airlines 737 MAX Bursts Tire Upon Landing, Shuts Down Runway For Hours

Singapore Airlines flight SQ114 suffered a landing incident at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) on June 13, after experiencing a double tire failure upon touchdown. FL360aero reported that the aircraft involved was a Boeing 737 MAX 8 operating the short-haul route from Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) to Kuala Lumpur. While the incident did not result in any injuries, it forced the closure of one of KLIA’s runways for more than six hours and caused operational disruptions across the airport.

According to Singapore Airlines, all 147 passengers and eight crew members on board were safe. The aircraft remained stranded on the runway after both tires on the left main landing gear were damaged during landing, requiring specialist recovery teams to remove the jet before normal runway operations could resume. The affected runway was reopened later that evening after inspections and recovery work were completed.

Flight SQ114 landed at Kuala Lumpur at approximately 1:27 PM local time when both tires on the aircraft’s left main landing gear reportedly failed during or shortly after touchdown. Photographs and videos shared online showed the damaged wheel assembly, with the aircraft unable to taxi away from the runway under its own power.

Commercial aircraft tires are designed to withstand significant landing loads, with 737 MAX aircraft equipped with multiple-wheel landing gear systems to provide redundancy in the event of tire damage. Nevertheless, simultaneous tire failures on the same landing gear assembly remain relatively uncommon and typically require a detailed technical inspection.

Airport personnel responded to the scene shortly after the incident. The aircraft remained stationary while authorities assessed the condition of the landing gear and ensured that passengers could safely disembark without further risk. The airline later confirmed:

“As the Boeing 737-8 aircraft had to be towed to a remote parking bay for repairs, all 147 passengers and eight crew members disembarked the aircraft and traveled to the airport terminal via buses.”

Recovery Operation Forces Extended Runway Closure

The disabled aircraft’s position on the runway meant that the airport was unable to use the affected runway until recovery operations were completed. Airport authorities closed Runway 14R/32L to allow engineers and emergency crews to inspect the area, clear debris, and prepare the aircraft for removal. Kuala Lumpur International Airport is Malaysia’s largest and busiest airport, serving as the country’s primary international gateway. Located approximately 28 miles (45 km) south of Kuala Lumpur, the airport operates a three-runway system that enables it to handle heavy passenger and cargo traffic throughout the day.

Aircraft recovery following landing gear incidents can be particularly challenging at major hub airports such as KLIA. The airport handled more than 63 million passengers in 2025 and serves as a key hub for Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia, and several international carriers. Before a runway can be reopened, airport personnel must conduct comprehensive inspections to ensure the surface is free of debris and that lighting, markings, and navigation systems have not been damaged.

The runway closure lasted for more than six hours, reducing airport capacity and contributing to delays for arriving and departing flights. Although KLIA continued operations using its two remaining runways, the temporary loss of one of its three runways affected aircraft sequencing during a busy operating period. The airport is designed to accommodate up to 100 million passengers annually under its long-term development plans, making runway availability critical to maintaining efficient operations across one of Southeast Asia’s most important aviation hubs.

The 737 MAX At Singapore Airlines

The 737 MAX 8 is part of Singapore Airlines’ narrowbody fleet operated through its regional network. Unlike the airline’s widebody aircraft, such as the Airbus A350 and A380, the 737 MAX is primarily deployed on short and medium-haul routes across Southeast Asia and selected destinations in the Asia-Pacific.

The 737 MAX family is the latest generation of Boeing’s long-running 737 program and features improved fuel efficiency, updated avionics, and new-generation CFM LEAP-1B engines. The 737 MAX 8, the variant flown by SQ114, typically seats around 160 passengers in Singapore Airlines’ two-class configuration and is frequently used on high-frequency routes such as Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Phuket, and other regional destinations.

Singapore Airlines inherited its 737 fleet following the integration of regional carrier SilkAir into the mainline airline. The carrier subsequently upgraded the aircraft cabins to align more closely with Singapore Airlines’ service standards. Today, the airline operates a fleet of more than 20 737 MAX 8 aircraft, with the type playing a key role in connecting regional destinations.
