5 Children Are Killed After Van and S.U.V. Collide in Rural Ontario

Five children were killed on Friday evening after a sport utility vehicle and a van carrying 10 passengers collided at an intersection in a rural township in Ontario, Canada, the provincial police said.

The children, four girls and one boy, ages 4 to 12, were passengers in the van, the Ontario Provincial Police said at a news conference.

An infant and four adults who were also in the van suffered serious injuries and were hospitalized, the authorities said.

The identities of the victims were not publicly released. It was unknown where the van was headed to or from.

The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of 4th Line and Wellington Road 12 in Mapleton Township.

The driver of the S.U.V., who was alone, was also hospitalized with serious injuries, the authorities said.

The police did not provide additional details about the extent of the injuries sustained by those who were hospitalized.

“This is an unimaginable loss,” said Dwight Thib, the chief superintendent of the West Region of the Ontario Provincial Police, at the news conference on Saturday afternoon.

The police said the cause of the crash was under investigation.
