Like other Western air forces, pilots in the Royal Air Force (RAF) are required to be commissioned officers. And like other Western air forces, commissioned officers are paid on a strict pay scale that has increments based on the number of years served. That said, there are also various allowances, flying pay, and sometimes retention payouts that can significantly impact take-home compensation.
It is useful to keep in mind that the RAF and USAF are very different from each other, both in their foundation and history, and in their modern composition. The RAF is much smaller than the USAF and is more centralized and has a more elite officer culture. Consequently, the senior officer ranks in the RAF are relatively small, with officers knowing each other personally. Pilots transition into strategic leadership roles sooner, and many senior commanders often continue to identify strongly as aviators even after progressing beyond regular flying duties.

Flight Lieutenant (OF-2)
Base salary $70,772 – $83,881
In the Royal Air Force, a Flight Lieutenant (OF-2) is an experienced line pilot, with the closest US Air Force equivalent being Captain (O-3). RAF rank names have evolved differently from their US counterparts. British Lieutenants can expect to have a base salary of £52,815 – £62,598 ($70,772 – $83,881), depending on their years of service. Like US Air Force Captains, they are qualified pilots with several years of experience and are a common rank for operational pilots.
Flight Lieutenants can be considered the “working pilot” rank in the Royal Air Force. These are some of the most experienced combat, transport, and helicopter pilots. They will often fly operational sorties, lead small formations, train junior pilots, and more. Generally, the pilots flying a Eurofighter Typhoon or Airbus A400M will be a Flight Lieutenant. The RAF currently only operates two types of fighter jets, the Eurofighter Typhoon and the F-35B. It is also getting ready to order 12 F-35As and is developing the next-generation Tempest/GCAP fighter jet.
The two ranks lower than a Flight Lieutenant are the Pilot Officer (OF-1) and the Flying Officer (OF-1). Pilot Officers generally don’t conduct operational flying, with modern RAF pilots skipping the rank entirely. Instead, they are typically commissioned directly as Flying Officers who do fly operational missions, but as a junior pilot rank. Pilot Officers’ counterparts in the US Air Force are Second Lieutenants, while a Flying Officer is equivalent to a USAF First Lieutenant. They can fly Eurofighter Typhoons, F-35Bs, RC-135 River Joints, A400M Atlases, and other RAF aircraft.

We’re going to take a deep dive into the world of US military command within the realm of aviation. Career progression, responsibilities and more.
4
Squadron Leader (OF-3)
Base salary $88,762 – $116,888
RAF Squadron Leaders (OF-3) are experienced pilots and are often flight commanders or instructors, and their US counterparts are regarded as Majors (O-4). Squadron Leader salaries are set at £66,240 – £87,230 ($88,762 – $116,888) depending on the years of experience. Most RAF fighter jets and other aircraft are flown by Flying Officers and Flight Lieutenants most of the time. Squadron Leadership positions are when a pilot’s role increasingly becomes that of both an aviator and a manager.
These will command a flight within a squadron, plan deployments, supervise training standards, manage mission schedules, act as a senior instructor pilot, and serve as an executive officer. They still fly frequently, including in combat, but more of their time is spent on paperwork and leadership roles compared with lower ranks. During periods of conflict, they may coordinate dozens of aircraft. While the RAF is much smaller than the USAF, it has consistently been one of the most active in the world ever since the end of WWII.
The RAF’s kinetic defensive participation in the 2026 US-Israeli air campaign over Iran is overshadowed by reports of the UK initially not permitting the US to use its airports for bomber strikes and the country loudly saying it would not take part in offensive operations. RAF Typhoons were actively countering Iranian drones and missiles throughout the conflict, including over Jordan, Cyprus, Qatar, Bahrain, the UAE, and elsewhere, accumulating over 1,150 flying hours. Since WWII (about 80 years), the RAF has seen some level of combat operations for about 55 to 65 of those years. By this metric, the RAF may be a contender for the third-most-active air force, after the USAF (active almost every year) and Israel (also active almost every year since 1948).
3
Wing Commander (OF-4)
Base Salary $123,977 – $143,319
The British Wing Commander (OF-4) has the responsibility of squadron command or senior staff pilot. These have a base salary of £92,520 – £106,955 ($123,977 – $143,319). Once an RAF pilot reaches the rank of Wing Commander, they are seen as having achieved the first truly major command rank. Wing Commander can command an entire squadron, oversee hundreds of personnel, coordinate deployments abroad, interact with NATO and allied command, set tactical and training priorities, and perform other missions.
They will still fly but may command a Typhoon fighter squadron, a strategic airlift squadron, or a helicopter wing. They do fly and maintain their qualifications, but time in the cockpit falls off significantly. It is often noted that the US Army developed from a Prussian/German professional military tradition, while the US Navy developed from a Royal Navy tradition. The USAF is different in that it developed from the US Army but then rebelled against the Army’s conservatism and was influenced by RAF traditions (mostly from WWII).
The USAF’s strategic airpower thinking was heavily influenced by the RAF of the period. The RAF developed from the British Army and Royal Navy military culture with a class-conscious mentality as opposed to the USAF’s egalitarianism and technology-centric culture. That said, the historical officer class hails from the middle/upper-middle classes as mellowed since the 1960s. The RAF’s internal culture values the officer class, squadron traditions, and British professionalism, making it feel somewhat like an “old-world military.” RAF culture often values British stoicism, “quiet professionals,” dry humor, an appreciation for deep squadron history, strong squadron identity, and formal mess nights.

Air Force pilots are paid based on their rank and years of service, although even the highest ranks typically earn less than commercial pilots.
2
Group Captain (OF-5)
Base salary $149,885 – $164,618
Group Captains are very senior pilots and are major base or wing commanders and do not normally fly in operational strike missions, although it is sometimes possible. Their US counterparts are Colonels (O-6), and they have base salaries of £111,854 – £122,849 ($149,885 – $164,618). It is also the equivalent to the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy and Colonel in the British Army.
In the RAF, a Group Captain is a very senior operational leadership rank overseeing multiple squadrons, managing thousands of personnel, coordinating logistics, working with the Ministry of Defense leadership, working in strategic planning, and commanding a major RAF station or air wing. They are typically not day-to-day operational pilots, though they may maintain their qualifications and fly ceremonial missions. They command stations or wings, while groups are typically led by Air Commodores or Air Vice-Marshals.
In the United States Air Force, Colonels can still carry out combat missions under certain conditions. This is especially true in fighter and attack units, although this is not very common. For example, the pilot of the F-15E Strike Eagle that was downed over Iran in 2026 and that triggered a massive multi-day manhunt and rescue operation was a USAF Colonel. It is known that the colonel was the Weapons Systems Officer (WSO) on the aircraft, although his name has not yet been released. The rescue effort was an enormous undertaking deep behind enemy lines and left many people thinking there would inevitably be a movie adaptation.
1
Air Commodore (OF-6)
Base salary $178,220 – $185,487
The highest RAF pilot rank is that of an Air Commodore (OF-6). These pilots occupy senior command roles (e.g., high-level leadership that requires a pilot background), but will not fly aircraft very often. They may fly enough to keep their pilot credentials, but they do not fly combat missions. Air Commodores are the equivalent of USAF Brigadier Generals (O-7). Base salary ranges from £133,000 – £138,423 ($178,220 – $185,487).
At this point, the Air Commodore’s duties include directing theater-wide air operations, coordinating with multinational NATO airpower, developing RAF doctrine and strategy, overseeing whole capability areas, advising senior government leadership, managing procurement programs, and more. An Air Commodore can oversee large expeditionary air campaigns, whole RAF operational groups, and long-term force planning. It is unclear how many Air Commodores the RAF has, although the UK Defense Journal reported in 2025 that the Royal Air Force has a total of 126 senior officers (ranks OF-6 to OF-10). Meanwhile, the Royal Navy/Royal Marines have 134 senior officers, and the British Army has 211.
All this said, there are some hard limits as to how many aircraft a high-level RAF officer can command, as the RAF is so much smaller than the USAF. The RAF only has around 110 Eurofighter Typhoons, 47 F-35B stealth fighters (shared with the Royal Navy), three RC-135s, nine Boeing P-8s, 14 Airbus Voyager tankers (A330 MRTTs), eight C-17s, 22 A400Ms, and other aircraft types. In practice, the UK will rarely assemble more than a few dozen fighter jets for a mission.
