Minister Sidhu speaks with Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Trade Affairs

June 2, 2026 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada

Yesterday, the Honourable Maninder Sidhu, Minister of International Trade, spoke with His Excellency Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Sayed, Minister of State for Foreign Trade Affairs of Qatar, to deepen the Canada-Qatar economic partnership. Minister Sidhu expressed Canada’s solidarity with Qatar in the wake of Iran’s unacceptable strikes across the Middle East, including in Qatar.

Minister Sidhu and Minister Al Sayed agreed to further strengthen the Canada-Qatar trade and investment relationship, building on the momentum generated by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s and Minister Sidhu’s visits to Qatar in January. The two ministers expressed their satisfaction with progress made to date, highlighting the strong and growing bilateral relationship and noting that both sides are advancing at a rapid pace on key economic initiatives to further connect the two countries’ economies.

The ministers discussed shared priorities, including trade diversification, enhanced business-to-business cooperation, increased air links between the two countries and the finalization of the Canada-Qatar foreign investment promotion and protection agreement. They also discussed the establishment of a bilateral Canada-Qatar business council to further support commercial ties.

Minister Sidhu expressed that Canada looks forward to welcoming Qatar to Vancouver, British Columbia, in June for the Canada-Qatar FIFA World Cup match, noting that it will be an important opportunity to advance commercial and people-to-people ties.
