The Boeing 737 MAX is an update to the 737NG. It was built as an answer to the Airbus A320neo, spurred by high demand for a refreshed 737, including a massive order by American Airlines for 100 of the type before it was even announced. The A320neo is essentially a standard A320 family aircraft with Sharklets as standard and new engines, so Boeing largely did the same. But the 737 MAX has faced more issues than almost any other airliner in recent history. So in this video, we take a look at what MCAS actually is, why Boeing added it to the 737 MAX in the first place, how it contributed to the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines disasters, and why the redesigned version is now considered far safer than before.
