Makai Lemon can become great asset to Eagles on special teams

In today’s NFL, more than ever, the return game is shaped perfectly to benefit kick returners. Special teams have always been special, but last season, in many games, special teams decided the game. If teams can get an elite special teams player, that can go a long way. The Philadelphia Eagles may have that in rookie receiver Makai Lemon.

In a recent article, Glenn Erby analyzes how Makai Lemon’s role as a rookie could get expanded:

“The Eagles drafted Makai Lemon for his speed, playmaking ability, and long-term upside at wide receiver, but the rookie could find his earliest opportunities on special teams. Special teams coordinator Michael Clay said Thursday that Lemon is among several players being evaluated in the kick-return competition as Philadelphia continues to install roles during the offseason.

“Everybody’s part of the kickoff return rotation,” Clay said.

“Makai, obviously he had that one year at USC where he was really good,” Clay said. “They had Zachariah Branch, obviously hard to pass up that guy.”

Philadelphia’s coaching staff has already seen traits that could translate to special teams production. Clay praised Lemon’s approach during early offseason work, pointing to his willingness to contribute across multiple drills in practice.”

Lemon is a difference maker and one who prioritizes what is best for the team. Whatever he can do to make the team better, he will do just that. Last season at USC, he was making big plays just as a receiver and on offense. In prior years, he showed he can be a special return man. Lemon can make a huge impact in his rookie season if he gets an opportunity to get involved on special teams as well.
