There are dozens of different creatures that call Proteus home in Subnautica 2, but none are more feared than the Leviathans. These gargantuan creatures are the primary predators you have to contend with as you’re exploring the ocean depths, and they can send you back to your Biolab in an instant.
Either way, whether you fear Leviathans or want to see them up close and in person, you need to know where they’re located on Proteus. This allows you to take a direct route to view the Leviathans or gives you a solid understanding of where to avoid as you’re playing. Below, we’ll give you the current names and locations of every Leviathan in Subnautica 2.
All Leviathans And Their Locations In Subnautica 2
In the early access stage of Subnautica 2, there are only four Leviathans that you can encounter: the Collector, the Shiver, the Great Jaw, and the Deepwing Brooder. Three of these Leviathans are dangerous, while the fourth is docile and won’t harm the player, regardless of how close they get.

The Collector Leviathan
This is arguably the most infamous Leviathan so far in Subnautica 2. The Collector, which is a massive squid, is the one that you’ll likely encounter the most often, as it’s near some story objectives on the map and spawns the most frequently out of the four Leviathans.
The Collector is most commonly found in the gorges that you can find between some of the major areas to the east of the starting lifepod. These gorges are located all around the Alien Ruins in multiple directions, and you’ll need to travel back and forth to this part of the map for the story. You’ll most often run into the Collector once you get to roughly 800-1,000 meters east of the lifepod.
When the Collector is near, you’ll start hearing a different kind of music, which likely means you want to turn the other way. If the Leviathan does track you down and you’re not in a Tadpole, you’ll be eaten instantly. However, if you are in a Tadpole, you can outrun the Leviathan after your vehicle takes some damage.
The Camouflage Biomod is especially helpful when trying to scan the Collector or escape its clutches. For the most part, though, you need a Tadpole, a Repair Tool, and some speed upgrades to get safely away from this Leviathan.
The Shiver Leviathan
Next up, we have the Shiver Leviathan, which has gone viral in Subnautica 2. The Shiver is a prehistoric-looking Leviathan with wings, a huge beak, and teeth the size of your Tadpole.
Fortunately, you won’t ever have to run into the Shiver in the current version of Subnautica 2 if you don’t want to. The Shiver, as of right now, only spawns on the out-of-bounds portion of the map, which can be found to the west of the starting lifepod. All you have to do is keep traveling towards the giant tree that pokes out of the water in Subnautica 2.
Around 350 meters in this direction, you’ll receive an error message stating this portion of the map isn’t developed yet, and to proceed with caution. You also can’t build anything in this part of the map. If you keep traveling after receiving the error message, three or four Shivers will spawn out of nowhere and swallow you whole, Tadpole included.
The Great Jaw Leviathan
The Great Jaw is quite an interesting Leviathan, as it doesn’t move and can be entirely avoided as long as you’re careful. However, if you happen to get caught in the Great Jaw’s clutches, it’s an immediate death. The Great Jaw is a massive clam that looks like an immovable object at first glance. If you poke around inside the clam, though, you’ll discover it’s alive and well.
To find the Great Jaw, head around 325 meters south of the starting lifepod and go 60 meters down. Here, you’ll see the clam shell sticking out like a sore thumb in the middle of the water.
You’re fully free to head inside the shell and look for some valuable loot, which requires the Sonar Resonator to obtain. You want to avoid the pink tendrils inside the clam at all costs, though, as tearing through one will cause the Great Jaw to start closing its shell. If you’re caught inside the shell as it fully closes, you’ll die instantly. You can technically cut the tendrils and stay alive if the Great Jaw doesn’t see you, but that won’t happen too often.
The Deepwing Brooder Leviathan
Finally, we have the Deepwing Brooder Leviathan, which you might not have even known existed. The Deepwing Brooder can technically spawn wherever there is open ocean and is completely docile to players. Though they’re not labeled as Leviathan-class creatures, that may be because they mean you no harm. Based on size, they certainly fit the bill.
Unfortunately, in Subnautica 2’s early access, you’re unlikely to ever encounter this Leviathan, as they are exceedingly rare. Think of this Leviathan as the Reefback from the first Subnautica, but far rarer to see swimming in the ocean.
