Cathie from Canada: Rhymes with Duck! Plus other sports updates, and some Canada good news

Damn!

Of all the posts I saw about the Monday night game, this says it best:

Once more into the breach, my friends…

And in other sports

The New York Knicks are going to the NBA finals for the first time in forever

Here’s some good news about Canada’s soccer team:

Jesse Marsch confirms that Promise David will be ready for the #FIFAWorldCup and says he is “fitter than he’s ever looked” since he’s been with the #CanMNT 🇨🇦

FIFA is doing a Canadian tour to raise excitement about the World Cup.

FIFA has announced the Canada Celebrates Tour for FIFA World Cup 2026.

It’s a 38-stop tour from coast-to-coast-to-coast and spans from Mount Pearl, NFL to Whitehorse, Yukon to Salmon Arm, BC.

Stops are located within a two-hour drive for more than 75% of Canadian residents

But my enthusiasm is limited, especially when I see stories like this. The USA won’t let the Iran team stay in America so they will commute from Mexico instead.

Dear world: Do not come to the Trump World Cup. Do not risk being mistreated by ICE or Border Patrol thugs and don’t give your support to this administration’s mistreatment of others.

With all the crap going on these days, caring about the World Cup is fairly far down on my list.

When I heard the FIFA World Cup was being held in the US I was sure I would be at one of the matches. Now, I have zero desire to attend any. thanks to Toupee Fiasco I’m not going near any stadium. I’ve never been less enthused about a World Cup in my life.

BREAKING FIFA
World Cup hotel cancellations are surging as global fans ditch the U.S. Main reasons are soaring costs, visa bonds, and Tr*mp’s dictatorial behavior.

The World Cup is being hosted by three countries, but somehow only one made it feel like a parole hearing.

But that aside, this is actually pretty outstanding

A team of Mexican artists painted a 200-square-meter mural by hand, earning them a Guinness World Record ahead of the 2026 World Cup, according to Reuters.

The substack It is OK, Eh! writes this great story about Wadin Bay, SK, just north of La Ronge, whose residents saved it during the 2025 Pisew Fire.

….In June 2025, the Pisew Fire came for them with 70-kilometre-an-hour winds.
The twenty-two who stayed had been preparing since Friday. By Monday morning, when the order came, they had sprinklers running on the cabins, lake water pumped up through hoses, mobile tanks positioned, and six to eight boats in the water at various points around the bay in case anyone needed to get out fast.
They went out into the lake twice when the fire got close. Two hundred, three hundred yards from shore. Waited. Came back in.
Then they fought from Monday evening until four in the morning. Twelve hours without stopping. Hauling water. Refilling pumps. Running the lines.
By the time the wind shifted and the fire moved past, Wadin Bay had lost one shed.
The Pisew Fire went on to burn 220,066 hectares of northern Saskatchewan. It destroyed 56 homes, cottages and businesses before it was contained in August.
From the air, the photos tell the story plainly. Scorched earth in every direction. And in the middle of it, on the water, a small community that did not burn.
Wadin Bay had been Saskatchewan’s first FireSmart community since 2013. Renaud and Bergsveinson had spent years clearing brush, running drills, preparing for exactly this.
When it came, they were ready…

Here is the photo of Wadin Bay after the fire.

PM Carney: “Most countries don’t think that they’re headed in the right direction. Canada, with all our imperfections, challenges, Canadians think we are headed in the right direction. And part of the reason why is because we’re Canadian, because we know we’ll come together and we’ll work to find a better way.”
