‘I believe he’ll be ready for the first match’ – Spain manager talks Lamine, Pedri, Gavi, Fermin, Eric Garcia

Barcelona players once again found themselves at the centre of attention as Luis de la Fuente unveiled Spain’s squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

As many as eight Barça names are set to play important roles for the national team, but the announcement also came with disappointment, injury concerns and important tactical hints regarding Spain’s plans.

“I don’t know if there are eight of them, and even if I did, I’ve already forgotten. They’re players who are capable of playing for Spain; they’re part of the national team.

“You know what Gavi’s injury meant; he’s highly valued. He’s the team’s star player, and as far as his footballing ability goes, I’m not about to reveal anything new,” said the national team manager.

The most painful update involved Fermin Lopez, who will miss the World Cup after suffering a fracture in the recent match against Real Betis.

The injury arrived at the worst possible moment for the young midfielder, who had been pushing to recover in time for the competition.

Speaking about the situation, De la Fuente admitted the setback had been emotionally difficult for everyone involved.

“It’s the hardest part; it’s the ugly side of sport.

“When someone suffers an injury like Fermin’s, being so close to a return and knowing he wouldn’t be able to recover… it’s tough.”

One of the biggest positives for Barcelona supporters was the strong backing shown towards Gavi.

After enduring difficult injury problems over the past year, the midfielder has successfully returned to regular football and has now regained an important role with the national team.

De la Fuente made it very clear that Gavi’s inclusion was fully deserved and not based on reputation alone.

“If you recall, Gavi was part of the Euro 2020 celebrations and was one of the team in the final. For us, it’s a joy on a personal level, but he’s earned it.

“Nobody has handed him anything on a plate. He’s shown great resilience, he’s recovered and is performing at a high level, plus he’s played a lot for his club. We know what we can ask of him.”

Meanwhile, Eric Garcia also received an important endorsement from the Spain coach.

De la Fuente suggested that the Barcelona defender is expected to be used primarily as a centre-back during the tournament while also highlighting his tactical flexibility.

“The initial plan is for him to be one of the centre-backs. We’ve doubled up on every position except for a few.

“Eric, like Pubill or Marcos Llorente, is a very versatile player who can play in several positions.”

The young winger is currently racing against time to regain full fitness ahead of the World Cup after recent physical issues.

As things stand, he is expected to miss Spain’s opening two group-stage matches and could potentially return later in the tournament.

Despite the enormous expectations surrounding the teenager, De la Fuente insisted that caution remains the priority.

“First and foremost, caution. We need to give him the time he needs, especially now.

“I believe he’ll be ready for the first match and we hope he can live up to expectations, but without putting undue pressure on him. He’s very mature.”

Lastly, the Spain coach stressed the importance of how a ‘fit’ Pedri will be crucial for the team.

“His injury at the European Championship was also a real blow. Pedri is much loved and highly valued. I’m delighted he’s with us.

“I just ask that he performs at the same level he has at his club, but he’s capable of so much more. We’re delighted to have players of his calibre,” he concluded.
