Closing arguments to begin today in Dean Penney trial

Dean Penney says he didn’t have anything to do with his wife’s disappearance

Dean Penney took to the witness box for a fourth day of testimony on Tuesday, telling the court he is innocent and that he lied to an undercover RCMP officer about his involvement in Jennifer Hillier-Penney’s death and disappearance. The CBC’s Colleen Connors reports.

Good morning. The Dean Penney murder trial is entering its next phase Tuesday morning, as it’s expected closing arguments from the Crown and defence will begin.

Penney is charged with first-degree murder in the death and disappearance of his estranged wife, Jennifer Hillier-Penney.

The evidence phase of the trial concluded on Wednesday. The court hasn’t sat since in order to prepare their instructions Justice Vikas Khaladkar will give to the jury.

The Crown called 22 witnesses over the trial, which is now entering its eighth week. The trial began on April 1 and was supposed to last the entire month, but that was extended. The trial is now on the docket until Friday.
