Only 70 Seats: 6 Routes Air Canada Flies Its Ultra-Premium, All-Business Class A320s

Air Canada has one of the most unusual narrowbody sub-fleets in the world. Away from its regular Airbus A320 fleet, the airline also operates Air Canada Jetz, a small all-premium group of four aircraft that are designed primarily for private charters, sports teams, corporate groups, and entertainment clients. Instead of a typical A320 cabin with well over 140 seats, these aircraft have just 70 Business Class seats.

You would think that most passengers will never see one on a normal booking screen, let alone fly one. But you would be wrong. What makes Air Canada Jetz a genuine ‘unicorn’ product is that, every so often, Air Canada schedules these aircraft on regular commercial flights, giving travelers a rare chance to book a seat on what is usually a private team-charter jet.

Air Canada Jetz began operations in late 2001 as a premium charter operation. Its business model is simple: take a mainline-style narrowbody aircraft, strip out the standard cabin, and install a low-density premium layout. Then use it for customers that need privacy, flexibility, and comfort, but with more space than is available on a typical private jet.

The fleet was originally built around Airbus A319s, which each had 58 premium seats. Those aircraft were then replaced in 2022 by four Airbus A320-200s, each configured with 70 Business Class recliner-style seats. The aircraft also now wear a distinctive black Air Canada Jetz livery, setting them apart from the white livery of the mainline Air Canada fleet. The A320s are older airframes, with an average age of 33.7 years, but they have found a second life as premium charter aircraft.

The main customer base is sports, notably all seven of the Canadian teams within the National Hockey League, such as the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs. Jetz has also started picking up US-based NHL teams such as the Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche, as well as branching out into other sports with the Toronto Raptors (basketball) and Toronto Blue Jays (baseball).

The same concept works for entertainment clients and high-profile groups, where a normal scheduled cabin is not private enough, but a small business jet is too small. Over the years, Air Canada Jetz has been used by entertainers such as Bruce Springsteen, U2, The Rolling Stones, and The Spice Girls.

A Rare Find On Commercial Routes

The interesting twist is that Jetz aircraft are not always hidden away in the charter world. Every so often, Air Canada schedules them on ordinary commercial flights. When that happens, the public can book a seat on what is normally a very exclusive sports team or VIP charter aircraft. AeroRoutes has reported that Air Canada is again scheduling its 70-seat Jetz A320s on selected regular services in June and July 2026.

These cover routes from Montreal and Toronto Pearson to Winnipeg, Halifax, Montreal, New York LaGuardia, and Quebec City. The latest schedule update shows the aircraft are set to operate just 15 regular-service departures over the next two months, with the flying scattered across selected dates, rather than forming a permanent route pattern. However, be warned, Air Canada does not exactly give the seats away.

On June 22, for example, a one-way ticket from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to Halifax / Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) ticket can be found for as little as $140 on other flights, while tickets on the Jetz-operated flight are priced from $622, even when marketed as ‘Economy.’ That is a steep premium, but it reflects the rarity of the experience: the flights tend to be noticed quickly by enthusiasts and frequent flyers, and get snapped up even at the far higher rates.

Delta Is The Closest Comparison

Many airlines offer their aircraft for charter services, whether it is American Airlines with its decades-long relationship with the Dallas Cowboys, or Bad Bunny chartering an entire Airbus A380 from Qantas. However, these are mostly re-purposed commercial airliners that are taking on the secondary task of private charters. Still, Delta Air Lines also operates a similar model to Air Canada, with a dedicated sub-fleet of 11 Boeing 757-200 aircraft in the ’75C’ configuration.

Each is fitted with 72 premium recliner-style seats. Delta’s sports-charter operation is considerably broader than Air Canada Jetz, with seven of the aircraft earmarked for the NBA and WNBA, but it also conducts flying for teams from the NFL, NHL, and MLB – in the latter league, it has a close association with its hometown Atlanta Braves. Such is its breadth that in 2021, as noted by TPG, it claimed a ‘grand slam’ by carrying the champions of the five biggest national sports on its charter aircraft.

However, despite its size, Delta’s charter 757s don’t wear a special livery like the Jetz aircraft, and Delta doesn’t sell tickets for them on regular passenger flights. This is why Air Canada Jetz is both different and special: it’s small, black-liveried, 70-seat A320 fleet mostly serves private clients, but occasionally slips into the public schedule. For passengers who want to fly something genuinely rare, Air Canada is still the one to watch.
