Lego’s huge Lord of the Rings Minas Tirith set revealed

Lego’s new Minas Tirith set is one of the company’s biggest ever, making it worthy of the massive weight of the Lord of the Rings franchise.

On Tuesday, The Lego Company and Warner Bros. pulled back the curtain on their next set from the J.R.R. Tolkien-created series to reveal a massive build of Minas Tirith, the capital city of Gondor, as seen in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings film trilogy. And when we say massive, we mean this is legitimately one of the biggest sets Lego has ever released.

Coming in at a whopping 8,278 pieces, the Lego Icons The Lord of the Rings: Minas Tirith – 25th Anniversary Legacy Collection set is even bigger than the huge Millennium Falcon build, though it comes in just below Lego’s Death Star. Among those pieces are 10 minifigures, including Aragorn, Arwen, Gandalf the White, Denethor, Pippin Took, and Faramir, along with four Soldiers of Gondor.

Lego describes the Minas Tirith set as a “hybrid microscale and minifigure-scale design.” The set features key locations including the citadel and throne room for builders to explore.

The Lego Icons The Lord of the Rings: Minas Tirith set (11377) features an appropriately massive price tag. It will cost $649.99 (£579.99 in the U.K./€649.99 in Europe). It will be available for purchase starting June 1 for Lego Insiders, and June 4 for the general public.

Lego LOTR enthusiasts who buy the new Minas Tirith set between June 1-7 will receive a gift with their purchase: the Lego Icons The Lord of the Rings: Grond (40893) battering ram.

Interestingly, this set is not Smart Play compatible like the recently announced Star Wars sets. Thus far, Smart Play has been limited to upcoming Star Wars releases. However, in theory, you can use the Smart Bricks and Smart tags to allow Gandalf and Denethor to have a lightsaber duel, if you’d like.

Here are the official specs for both newly announced Lego Lord of the Rings sets:
