Officials in Tennessee continue search for Craig Berry, veteran accused of shooting wife

A manhunt is underway as Tennessee officials search for a retired special forces veteran accused of shooting his wife during a domestic altercation early Friday.

The Stewart County Sheriff’s Office said it was “actively searching” for Craig Berry, who is believed to be armed, in connection with an incident at his home in Dover, Tennessee. Deputies responded to the area around 1:30 a.m. Friday, but Berry fled into nearby woods before they arrived, the sheriff’s office said.

Berry’s wife was taken to a medical facility, but her condition is unknown.

As of Monday, the sheriff’s office said it was still searching for Berry, who was last seen wearing camouflage clothing near River Trace Road in the state’s northwest, about 90 miles from Nashville.

Officials noted that he has “extensive training in survival tactics,” is an “excellent swimmer and diver,” and is “in good physical shape.”

Berry is believed to be armed with at least one handgun and extra ammunition, the sheriff’s office said. It said Monday that an additional warrant had been secured accusing him of second-degree attempted murder.

On Saturday, the sheriff’s office said that it had scaled back its search of the wooded area, but that it was still “actively looking” and that it has “NO idea if he is still in the area.”

The sheriff’s office asked nearby residents to check their trail cameras “cause we’re not ruling anything out,” noting that Berry “might have outside help.”

On Monday, the sheriff’s office said it was working with the U.S. Marshals Service to conduct a detailed search from River Trace Road to Highway 79 to parts of Highway 232 this week.

The sheriff’s office has repeatedly asked anyone with information to call 911.
