Minister Joly and Minister Rodriguez meet with International Civil Aviation Organization Council President and Secretary General

Today, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Transport and Quebec Lieutenant, met with Salvatore Sciacchitano, President of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council, and Juan Carlos Salazar, ICAO Secretary General, during their official visit to Ottawa.

During their meeting, the Ministers, ICAO Council President Sciacchitano and ICAO Secretary General Salazar acknowledged that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the signing of the Chicago Convention, ICAO’s founding document. Minister Joly and Minister Rodriguez reaffirmed Canada’s unwavering commitment to serve as a world-class host to ICAO and to ensure the organization continues to thrive in Montréal, the world capital of civil aviation. They also reaffirmed Canada’s dedication to supporting ICAO in its pursuit of a safe, secure, sustainable, inclusive, and accessible global aviation system. The Ministers pledged to continue Canada’s close collaboration with ICAO and its member states to develop the highest standards for global civil aviation.

The Ministers, ICAO Council President Sciacchitano and ICAO Secretary General Salazar also discussed key global aviation priorities such as making accessibility a priority for ICAO and member states and enhancing the greening of the sector, strengthening technical standards, and upholding a rules-based international air transport system. Minister Joly and Minister Rodriguez emphasized the importance of the efficient management of the organization’s priorities, including its role in the peaceful settlement of aviation-related disputes.

The Ministers, ICAO Council President and ICAO Secretary General agreed to continue working together on their shared priorities. Minister Joly and Minister Rodriguez were glad to host the President and Secretary General in Canada’s Capital.
