It’s been a little under a month since The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opened in theaters across the globe on April 1. However, if you’re waiting for the Nintendo adaptation to make its way onto a streaming service before watching, don’t worry: you won’t have to wait long.
Directed by Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath (Teen Titans Go!), The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is based on Nintendo’s 2007 video game Super Mario Galaxy and is a sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. After defeating Bowser (voiced by Jack Black) in the previous film, Mario (Chris Pratt), Luigi (Charlie Day), and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) are living a fairly idyllic existence in the Mushroom Kingdom. However, that all changes when they get word that Peach’s long-lost sister, Princess Rosalina (Brie Larson), has vanished, potentially at the hands of Bowser’s son, Bowser Jr. (also voiced by Jack Black).
Determined to save her sister, Peach and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) head off on a new intergalactic adventure. They are eventually joined by Mario and Luigi, as well as the brothers’ newest ally, Yoshi (Donald Glover).
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie had a massively successful opening weekend, though it has since been beaten by a surprising contender. Despite its strong opening weekend, the newest Mario adventure will be released sooner than you think. According to When to Stream, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be released via premium video-on-demand (PVOD) on digital streaming on May 5. As Forbes reports, When to Stream is typically accurate; however, Universal Pictures has not yet announced or confirmed the release date, so take the news with a pinch of salt.
With The Super Mario Galaxy Movie only recently debuting in theaters, a May 5 release onto streaming seems a tad early. That said, it does fit within Universal Pictures’ theatrical-to-digital streaming window, with its films in theaters for at least five weekends before release on video-on-demand. In 2027, that window will extend to seven weekends.
Polygon’s Michael McWhertor described Universal Pictures’ latest Mario story as “dazzling, candy-coated chaos.” If that sounds like a movie you can’t wait to sit down and watch with your family, then get your snacks prepared: May 5 is a little over a week away.
