A review from the Yukon Child and Youth Advocate’s Office of the government’s sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) policy paints a bleak picture of how it feels to be a gay or transgender student in the Yukon.
The 122-page report, released last week, drew on data from the territory’s Department of Education as well as feedback from 781 participants through online surveys, focus groups and interviews.
It found issues ranging from a lack of acknowledgement and inclusion in classrooms to unchecked bullying and harassment, with several students and teachers describing open use of slurs at school.
