ive been hearing a lot of people disappointed that avi lewis won instead of heather mcpherson, but i would 1000% have someone who will (hopefully, have yet to see materially with avi lewis) actually stand their ground against oil&gas and the whims of provinces like alberta than someone who thinks that acquiescing for the sake of a few new votes will get us anywhere. yeah mcpherson would probably work better with the alberta ndp than lewis will (nenshi already proving this point), but what works best for the alberta ndp is NOT what works best for the federal ndp: more pipelines is a popular idea with albertans sick of the UCP’s other policies, but it doesnt sound quite as good for provinces with wealth not inextricably tied to oil&gas or people who give a shit about Indigenous sovereignty and land determination. this may be an radical take, but i dont believe in fucking over Indigenous peoples and reproducing settler colonial structures in order to try and get a few conservatives to vote orange. i think we needed a federal party leader that isnt going to stick with the status quo of the ndp (since it clearly hasnt been working for us for a while) and mcpherson just embodies that status quo to me–making promises that we want, and then when it actually comes down to it, making compromises with the liberals that we do not want and will harm us. im saying all of this as an albertan who doesnt want to leave Indigenous peoples in the dust, and theyre always the first to be left when white ndp voters are desperate for a win, no matter the cost. if yall actually wanted to support Indigenous peoples, you shouldve voted for tanille johnston, not the one who wanted to expand the trans mountain pipeline however long ago. stop giving the alberta ndp more excuses than they already have.
