Vans is riding the momentum of its hit designer-inspired sneakers by delivering yet another premium spin on one of its classic models.

Set for an April 2 launch is the new Vans Premium Authentic Needlework, which is also being called the Crochet Floral colorway by some stockists. Nomenclature aside, what’s most remarkable about this upcoming release is its intricate needlework detailing, which is placed atop the Authentic’s typical canvas upper construction. 

Here, the upper gives springtime energy with a mix of black, blue, red, white and yellow flower patterns. Thicker-than-usual rope shoelaces are equipped with wooden beads at their ends, and there’s also a flower-shaped wooden charm which rests atop the shoelaces. Vans says the needlework detailing is intended to give the shoe an artisanal edge, while the wooden accoutrements add a handcrafted element.

Unlike many of Vans’ popular recent releases, there doesn’t appear to be any handbag or otherwise designer connection with the upcoming Needlework look. Those designer-informed looks, including the “Souvenir” and a “Charms” pack of Old Skool styles, were created by Greg Betty, the former senior footwear designer lead of color and trend for OTW by Vans and Vans Premium. Each pair took unofficial inspiration from iconic Chanel bags, with the sneakers using premium materials and details to get their messaging across.

More recently, Betty, who now works at Nike, Inc.’s Jordan Brand, shared a trio of flame-adorned, pre-distressed Old Skools which are set to be released on April 1.

Beyond its popular looks referencing luxury fashion houses, Vans has also found great success with studded and pearlized versions of its classic sneakers including the Old Skool and Classic Slip-On. 

While Vans and other retailers will officially release the Premium Authentic Needlework on April 2 for $110, the unisex style has already arrived at some retailers including Hibbett, where many sizes have quickly sold out. The style code for the upcoming release is VN000Y0S448.
