Vietnam-based start-up airline, Sun PhuQuoc Airways, has placed an aircraft order for up to 40 Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets, which will serve as the carrier’s backbone for long-haul international travel in the coming years. Additionally, this order will not only help the carrier develop its operational network but also help achieve its aim of having a fleet of 100 aircraft by 2030.
The 787, being an efficient new-generation jet with the latest innovations currently available on the market, has proven itself to be a reliable aircraft to fly, delivering great operational economics. This makes it a suitable aircraft type for an ambitious start-up to go long-haul.
Order For Up To 40 Dreamliner Jets

Boeing has secured a major order for up to 40 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner jets from a start-up airline based in Vietnam, Sun PhuQuoc Airways. The carrier commenced its operations in November 2025, and this latest widebody order is placed in line with the airline’s plans of having 100 aircraft in its fleet by 2030, connecting major global destinations to its hub at Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) in the Southwest of Vietnam.
The Boeing 787-9 is the most popular of the three Dreamliner variants, with data from Boeing’s technical specification showing that the aircraft can carry up to 296 passengers, for distances of up to 7,565 NM (14,010 km). This would not only provide the airline with sufficient capacity but also the global reach the airline is keen on having, as these aircraft will have the range to connect its hub to major destinations across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Australasia, and North America.
In Boeing’s press release, Stephanie Pope, the president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, stated,
“The 787-9’s unmatched range, fuel efficiency and passenger comfort will give the airline flexibility to open new long-haul markets, lower operating costs and contribute to local tourism growth.”
More About Sun PhuQuoc Airways
Belonging to the Sun Group, the Sun PhuQuoc Airways is a start-up airline which, received its operational certificate from the Aviation Authorities in Vietnam in September 2025, and began operations in November, with a fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft.
Since commencing operations three months ago, data from FlightRadar24 shows that the carrier already has a fleet of 10 aircraft, comprising exclusively of A320 family aircraft. This includes two used Airbus A320neo aircraft, two used Airbus A321 aircraft, and six newly delivered Airbus A321neo aircraft. The carrier at the moment only uses these aircraft to fly domestically, serving four airports, which include Hanoi International Airport (HAN), Da Nang International Airport (DAD), the country’s capital, Ho Chi Minh City International Airport (SGN), and the airline’s base, Phu Quoc International Airport.
Reports from ch-aviation indicate that the airline’s management previously stated its future fleet would be a split of sixty Airbus narrowbody aircraft, paired with 40 Boeing widebody jets. The carrier already has 10 of its narrowbody aircraft, and with the first of the Dreamliner aircraft expected to be delivered to the airline in 2030, the carrier can be expected to show significant network development in the years to come.

It Has Been A Great Week For Boeing
While Boeing secured the deal for up to 40 Dreamliners with Sun Phu Quoc Airways, the manufacturer, in the past two days, also secured two additional deals for 65 jets. This includes a deal with Air Astana for up to 15 Boeing 787-9 aircraft, and a deal with Vietnam Airlines for an order of 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft.
In the case of Air Astana, this deal helps the carrier not only expand its capacity and operations, but also helps modernize the airline’s fleet, especially in replacing its older Boeing 767 widebody aircraft. Furthermore, with the new Dreamliners, the airline can also provide its customers with a significantly enhanced travel experience. As for the Vietnam Airlines order, this deal is quite significant, because thus far, the carrier’s narrowbody fleet is exclusively made up of Airbus aircraft. This new order will see Boeing aircraft join the carrier’s narrowbody fleet.
The two orders from Sun PhuQuoc Airways and Vietnam Airlines, accounting for up to 90 aircraft, also fall in line with Boeing’s market forecasts for the next two decades, as the manufacturer predicts that the Southeast Asia market will see significant growth in air travel during this period. Similar forecasts have also been published by Airbus. Hence, it will be interesting see the developments in the South East Asian aviation market in the coming years.
