It didn’t come easy, but the U.S. men’s hockey team is on to the semifinal round after a 2-1 overtime win over Sweden.
Team USA held a 1-0 lead the majority of the game until the Swedes tied it with 1:31 remaining in the third period. Minnesota Wild defender Quinn Hughes netted the game-winning goal three minutes and 27 seconds into overtime. The U.S. will now face Slovakia in the semifinals on Friday. Canada also needed overtime to advance, beating Czechia 4-3. The Canadians will play Finland in the other semifinal.
On the slopes, Mikaela Shiffrin won gold in her final 2026 Winter Olympics appearance. The most decorated Alpine skier of all time, Shiffrin dominated in the slalom, finishing a full 1.50 seconds ahead of her closest competition. It’s sweet redemption for Shiffrin, who hadn’t medaled in her previous eight Olympic starts and experienced post-traumatic stress from a scary crash in 2024.
