Which 6 Airlines Have The World’s Greatest Economy Seat Pitch In 2026?

Which airline has the greatest economy class seat pitch in 2026? This is a very difficult question to answer, as in the real world, it varies within an airline. The seat pitch can vary depending on whether the aircraft is for short-haul flights or long-haul flights, on the type of aircraft, and on whether the airline is rolling out a new cabin configuration or not. If an airline is introducing a new cabin configuration, then the seat pitch varies depending on whether that particular aircraft has been refreshed or not.

Skytrax awards Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, Singapore Airlines, Qatar, ANA, Emirates, STARLUX, China Airlines, and Malaysia Airlines as having the best economy class seats in 2025, although it doesn’t offer any insights into the nuances just mentioned. Here are some of the best airlines by aircraft pitch for 2026.

JetBlue

JetBlue is a mostly domestic US-based airliner, although it does offer some transatlantic flights with its fleet of narrowbody aircraft. It is often named as the US-based airliner that offers the greatest seat pitch at around 32 or more inches. The seat width is also typically 17.8 inches to 18.4 inches wide, and is noticeable as it is a low-cost carrier. JetBlue is able to achieve wider seats partly thanks to the type of aircraft it flies. It flies the Airbus A320 family and the A220.

Amongst modern narrowbody and regional aircraft, the Boeing 737 is notable for not only being the oldest (designed in the 1960s), but also the narrowest for any six-abreast aircraft. The newer (1980s-designed) A320 family has a cabin width around seven inches wider, while also seating six-abreast. JetBlue is one of the largest operators of the new cleansheet A220 regional airliner. This aircraft is narrower at 10 feet, 9 inches in cabin width, but only seats five-abreast meaning there is considerably more width per seat than 737s.

In 2019, JetBlue won an award for the best domestic economy and said, “JetBlue was the only airline – domestically and globally – to win awards for both economy and business. The wins underscore JetBlue’s long-standing commitment to offering the very best customer experience in the sky no matter which product a customer chooses.” However, this is changing as JetBlue is retrofitting its fleet to add Mini Mint domestic first class, which is reducing the standard economy seat pitch to 30 inches.

Qatar Airways

It is difficult to say which airline offers the most seat pitch after ANA, JAL, Korean Air, and maybe Emirates (considered below). Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways, Swiss International, Turkish Airlines, and others are all contenders. They all offer an economy class seat pitch of close to 32 inches, which is around upper-standard or above average for mainline carriers. Mainline carriers typically offer 30 to 31 inches of seat pitch for this type of fare.

Historically, mainline airlines would often offer 32 to 34 inches on long-haul flights, but fuel prices and other factors compressed it to 30 to 31 inches. Looking at Qatar Airways, it offers 31 to 32 inches of seat pitch in economy class for its 787-9 Dreamliners. This is the same for economy class on its A380 Superjumbos, although the seat width is 16.9 to 18.5 inches (arm to arm).

Its refreshed Boeing 777-200LRs used for ultra long haul flights have the same economy class seat pitch and a width of 16.9 to 17.4 inches. Other 777s have all their economy class seats listed as having a pitch of 32 inches and a width of 18.3 inches. While Qatar’s 777s may not vary much in seat pitch, they do in width. -200LRs are configured 3-3-3 or nine abreast while -300ERs are typically configured 3-4-3 or 10 abreast.

Emirates

Emirates is another airline that is highly acclaimed for its economy class service and its seat pitch that can reach up to 34 inches. Emirates’ fleet is notable for only consisting of A380 Superjumbos and Boeing 777s before it received its first A350s in late 2024. While Emirates may offer one of the world’s greatest seat pitches on its Boeing 777s, these aircraft are configured in the typical 3-4-3, making them squishier than leading Asian carriers like Korean Air and JAL.

The A350s are configured 3-3-3 or nine abreast, and the giant A380s are configured 3-4-3 or nine abreast. The seat pitch between these aircraft types varies, with the A380 and A350 typically offering up to 32 inches and the Boeing 777 fleet offering between 33 and 34 inches.

It should be noted that Emirates is in the process of refreshing the cabins of its A380s and most of its 777s, while A350s are delivered with the new cabin. While one of the primary concerns of the refresh is to introduce premium economy seats to Emirates’ fleet, it also improves the remaining economy class seats. Emirates says these new economy seats are “ergonomically designed seats also include full leather headrests with flexible side panels that can also be adjusted vertically for optimum support.”

Korean Air

Korean Air is ranked by Skytrax as having the third-best economy class seats in the industry. These sometimes offer as much as 33 or 34 inches of seat pitch and are praised for spacious economy comfort on long-haul flights. Some of the greatest seat pitch is to be found on its fleet of Boeing 777 and A380 widebody aircraft. Asiana also offers a generous economy class seat pitch, but it is now being absorbed by Korean Air.

Korean Air 777-300ER’s economy class seats are configured with a “seat pitch 33~34 inches (84~86cm),” although this can be 32 inches, depending on exactly which -300ER is being flown. It is industry standard to configure economy class seats in 777s 3-4-3 for nine-abreast seating. However, like Japan Airlines, Korean Air only configures these 3-3-3 or nine-abreast, allowing the seats to be generously wide.

Korean Air was planning to reconfigure its 777s to be 3-4-3 or ten-abreast, but this triggered an outcry online in Korean, and Korean Air backed down. According to Korea’s news outlet, The Chosun Daily, Korean Air stated, “We have decided to completely halt the plan to reconfigure the economy class seating arrangement to a 3-4-3 layout for Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.”

ANA All Nippon Airways

All Nippon Airways (ANA) is the rival of Japan Airlines and also offers some of the world’s most generous seat pitch. In its new Boeing 787-8s and its 777-300ERs, it targets a seat pitch of around 34 inches. Of the 787-9, ANA says, “34-inch seat pitch with generous legroom.” The seat widths are around 17.2 inches or approx. 43.7 cm, depending on the exact seats.

Some seats on other aircraft may have a seat pitch of around 31 inches, such as with its 787-8s, which tend to be higher-density aircraft for shorter-haul flights. This is a common pattern with 787 aircraft. The smallest variant, the 787-8, is often configured more densely and often used on shorter, thinner routes. The extra-stretched 787-10 is typically used on thicker short to medium haul routes and is also often configured more densely.

The Boeing 787-9, by contrast, occupies a sweet spot between range and medium capacity and is often tasked with long-haul intercontinental flights. This is why the seat pitch on the 787-9 is often greater than its shorter and its stretched counterparts. But there are plenty of exceptions, as even ANA’s 787-10s are configured with 34 inches of economy class seat pitch. As a rule of thumb, aircraft configured for long-haul flights will have an airline’s maximum seat pitch.

Japan Airlines

Japan Airlines is often ranked as the airline offering the most seat pitch in its economy class. It is ranked the best by Skytrax and by other rankings. It typically offers a generous 33 to 34 inches of seat pitch. As with other airlines, the seat pitch varies by aircraft type. It is around two centimeters (over half an inch) greater on its long-haul Boeing 777s and 767s than on its Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

In its Boeing 787s, the airline even configures them with considerably more width and space between the seats. These are configured at 2-4-2 or eight-abreast, when the industry standard is 3-3-3 or nine abreast. This 2-4-2 configuration is also found in JAL’s aging fleet of 767s, while the Boeing 777-300ERs are configured 3-3-3 in economy class Sky Wider. That is nine-abreast in an industry that typically configures them ten-abreast in economy class.

Japan Airlines’ Sky Wider seats provide an industry-winning 19 inches of width. Japan Airlines says these seats offer a “deeper pitch and a slimmer seat design for more leg room and a more comfortable personal space.” When it comes to seat width, JAL says, “Seat width: Approx. 47 cm in JAL SKY SUITE 777, approx. 45 cm in JAL SKY SUITE 767, approx. 48 cm in JAL SKY SUITE 787. Some seats may vary.”
