Boeing has been awarded a $2.81 billion contract with the Republic of Korea Air Force, which will cover the design and development of aircraft systems that will modernize the F-15K fleet. The contract was issued to Boeing in St. Louis, Missouri, and was done so at the request of the South Korea Defence Acquisition Program Administration.
As detailed under the contracts awarded for January 30, 2026, and released by War.gov. The contract is under the Foreign Military Sales framework, and the agreement will be structured as a hybrid cost-plus fixed-fee incentive contract, with a total cap of $2,805,961,005 exactly. The majority of work will be undertaken at St. Louis and is expected to run through for the next decade, up until December 31, 2037. At the time of the awarded contract, a total of $540 million in Foreign Military Sales funds were to be obligated.
Soul Source Acquisition
This upgrade program is to provide a new integrated aviation and mission systems architecture for the Republic of Korea’s F-15K military aircraft. The contract, which was awarded as part of a sole-source acquisition, was awarded through the U.S Air Force Life Cycle Management Centre located in Ohio at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base as part of a contracting activity.
For the F-15K, the contract notice did not specify specific subsystems, but will see the modernizations of electronic warfare, radar, communications, mission computing, and additional cockpit upgrades that will see the aircrfats service life extended and increase combat capabilities.
The F15K, more commonly known as the ‘Slam Eagle’, is an integral part of the Republic of Korea air combat force, and uses the aircraft for general air defence, and deepstrike or precision attack operations on and around the Korean peninsula, a hotly politicized region that is politically divided at the 38th parallel between North and South Korea.
Well Suited For Long Duration Strike Missions
Currently, the Republic of Korea operates the F-15K as well as the F-35A fighter. These two aircraft complement each other, with the F-15K being able ot manage sufficient payload capacity in a two-seat configuration, which has a range capable of long-duration strike missions and additional command-and-control roles, whereas the F-35A is well suited for penetration or stealth operations.
For Boeing, the award to modernize the F-15K will see the South Korean air force see these planes continue to be operational throughout this and the next decade, and support the regional air force to continue to operate advanced aircraft with sufficient air defence systems and sensors. These upgrades will also bring closer ties between the U.S and allied forces, which at times operate under combined command structures.
To begin, the contract will see several design and development tasks undertaken, with Defence Blog outlining that this will result in the programme being completed in phases, including systems integration and testing to be validated before wider fleet installation begins. This will be managed by the Foreign Military Sales Process, which will permit the U.S Government to oversee execution and technical integration, whilst also providing long-term support.
