Sinners’ record-breaking Oscars run turns the vampire movie into a streaming blockbuster

The most unforgettable vampire movie in recent years is currently a major streaming hit after making Oscar history. Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, which broke records by becoming the first film to be nominated for 16 Academy Awards, is topping several streaming charts, including HBO Max and Apple TV.

Sinners enjoyed overwhelming commercial success at the box office last year, earning $368 million worldwide while also receiving critical acclaim for making an indelible mark on the horror genre. It is no surprise that Sinners’ blockbuster streak has extended to its performance on streaming and rental services. Per FlixPatrol, the film stands at #1 on Prime Video and #2 on HBO Max’s Top 10 charts, while maintaining its position among Apple TV’s Top 20 movies in the United States for over four months.

Sinners’ multiple Oscar nods smash several longtime records, including those of All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997), and La La Land (2016), which earned a total of 14 nominations each. In addition to nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor, this astounding sweep includes nods to Ruth E. Carter’s impressive costume design and Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s layered cinematography. The film’s scathing examination of cultural erasure, race and deeply entrenched social inequity in America made it a hit with critics. But Sinners is also immensely rewatchable thanks to a hard pivot into supernatural horror in its third act.

With Sinners expected to dominate the Oscars, it makes sense for it to reclaim top positions on streaming and rental rankings. Another promising Best Picture contender, Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, isn’t too far behind with its #3 ranking on HBO Max charts in the United States, with Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine sitting at #1 at the moment.

The popularity of Sinners will most likely continue to grow, as Coogler’s film feels like a cultural watershed that plates up something refreshingly original while refusing to adhere to the rules.

Sinners is streaming on HBO Max and is available for rental or purchase on Prime Video, Apple TV, and other digital platforms.
