In the chaotic moments following the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, emotions spilled onto the field at Hard Rock Stadium. ESPN’s postgame coverage showed Miami running back Mark Fletcher Jr. taking a swing at Indiana defensive lineman Tyrique Tucker as the teams shook hands following the Hoosiers’ 27-21 victory Monday night.

The footage showed the two players exchanging words before Fletcher swung his right arm in Tucker’s direction. A Miami assistant coach quickly stepped between them and pushed Fletcher away. It was unclear from the video whether the punch connected.

The altercation came moments after Indiana completed an undefeated season and won the first national championship in program history. The cause of the confrontation was not immediately known, and neither school commented publicly on the incident late Monday.

Tucker, who recorded one tackle in the championship game, was among the 13 players who transferred from James Madison to Indiana after coach Curt Cignetti took over the program. That group helped spark a rapid turnaround for the Hoosiers, who went the FBS’ losingest team to national champions just two seasons after hiring Cignetti.

Additional video from WPLG-TV in Miami showed a contrasting moment. In that clip, Fletcher was seen congratulating and hugging Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza amid the on-field celebrations. Fletcher and Mendoza are both from the Miami area.

On the field, Fletcher was one of Miami’s most productive players in the championship game. The junior running back carried the ball 17 times for 112 yards and two touchdowns, including a 57-yard scoring run early in the second half that cut into Indiana’s lead. Miami remained within one score late into the fourth quarter before the Hoosiers sealed the win with a late interception.

Fletcher’s performance capped a strong postseason run for the Hurricanes’ offense. Over four playoff games, he rushed for 507 yards and accounted for three total touchdowns, serving as a key piece in Miami’s path to the national title game.

Fletcher spoke with the media after the loss, but video of the incident didn’t surface until after his interviews had concluded.
