Is there anything more classic than a pair of diamond studs? They’re timeless and surprisingly versatile: A small, understated diamond can be an everyday staple, while a bigger stone can perfectly elevate a simple outfit. Ever since Molly Ringwald wore them in “The Breakfast Club,” we’ve been obsessed with diamond earrings.
Fortunately, we have even more choice than ever before. In the past two decades, the diamond market has exploded with ethical, fair trade, and sustainable options. And, on top of that, direct-to-consumer brands allow for more reasonable prices since they sell right to you. But there’s now so much choice that you’ll want to look carefully at each brand to make sure they’re living up to the hype.
When you’re on the hunt for the perfect pair, look for various certifications (more on that in a minute) to ensure your diamonds are being sourced responsibly. You’ll also want to prioritize brands that value the Four Cs (cut, color, clarity, and carat) for higher-quality stones. For an extra dose of sustainability, some brands use recycled metals or allow you to refurbish or return old pieces. Below, we’ve rounded up the most ethical, sustainable, and quality diamond studs, at a variety of price points.
There are a few aspects to consider when you’re looking to buy a piece of diamond jewelry:
- Lab-grown vs. natural: Lab-grown and natural diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical, but they differ in origin and cost. Natural diamonds, which are mined from the Earth, are more expensive and can often suffer from human rights issues. Lab-grown diamonds are created in a lab setting over a few weeks and are less expensive, but their resale value is lower.
- Recycled metals: Some brands work with reclaimed precious metals, including silver, platinum, and gold, from sources including electronics, scrap metal, and even old jewelry. They refine the metals and use them to make new jewelry; this lowers the need for more mining and lowers the amount of emissions needed to create new pieces. Recycled metal can be recycled again!
- The Kimberley Process: This global certification is designed to prevent “conflict diamonds” (i.e., diamonds sold to fund violent conflict) from entering the market. While it doesn’t cover every problematic aspect of sourcing, including human rights and labor abuses, it still establishes important controls on imports and exports.
- Conflict-free sourcing: Beyond the Kimberley Process, brands often use independent audits to track their diamonds from the mines (or labs) all the way to their stores. Systems like Everledger can also catalogue a diamond’s “journey” from origin to cutting, polishing, and transport. Lab-grown diamonds are innately conflict-free because brands know the labs making them.
- Third-party certifications: A certification (a.k.a. grading report) for a diamond is an objective and independent assessment that measures the diamond’s qualities, including the 4Cs. Any reputable brand should make use of these certifications; without them, you can’t be sure of the quality. The certification should be obvious on the site and/or on the product page; labs include the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the International Gemological Institute (IGI), HRD Antwerp, and the Gem Certification & Assurance Lab (GCAL).
These aren’t the only considerations, but they’ll at least ensure a level of quality and transparency that you might not find otherwise. If you’re curious, Brilliant Earth has a comprehensive guide to diamond quality, including the differences between lab and natural.
Should you choose natural or lab-grown diamonds?
There are different ethical considerations at play, so the answer kind of depends. Some brands have established robust processes to ensure that their natural diamonds are as ethically sourced as possible, but the stones still have a long supply chain: natural diamonds need to be mined, which requires more labor, causes more emissions, and can be tied to exploitative practices.
Lab-grown diamonds, by contrast, start with a diamond seed and build real diamonds in a few weeks using either Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), which uses heated hydrocarbon gases, or High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT), which mimics the geological process of making natural diamonds. It’s worth pointing out that this process takes a lot of energy, so the carbon footprint depends on whether the lab is using coal or a renewable energy source.
Ethical brands will often go out of their way to explain their processes, so look for their sustainability and sourcing pages — or, go in person to talk to a representative.

1. Brilliant Earth
Best For | Impressive ethics
Lab Grown Options | Yes
Prices Starting At | $150 for a single stud
Brilliant Earth has been making ethical fine jewelry since 2005 — they have been, in fact, a huge influence on the ethical diamond market and pioneered the notion of going “beyond conflict-free.” As such, their site is incredibly robust and allows for an experience that’s as close as possible to in-person shopping if you’re browsing online or aren’t near one of their showrooms. That includes 3D viewing, virtual try-ons, and skin-tone selectors to see how the jewelry will look on you, as well as the option to do a virtual appointment. They’re also particularly well-known for their “design your own” engagement ring platform, where you can browse diamonds, choose a custom setting, and size it perfectly — all online.
Their diamond earrings run the gamut from starburst to olive branch, as well as different settings for more classic shapes. They structure their stud backs with intention, so that the stone doesn’t sag or tip over on your ear. Their bestselling perfect 4-prong diamond stud earrings offer a ton of customization: you can choose natural or lab-grown stones, start at 0.25 ct tw and go up to 4 ct tw for a natural or 8 ct tw for a lab-grown stud, and choose between white gold, yellow gold, and platinum. The free lifetime warranty is the cherry on top of the experience.
Customer Review | “I’ve wanted a pair of professional studs that go with anything for a long time, and these fit the bill! I’ve even accidentally slept in them, and they were comfortable. Don’t catch on hair, haven’t dug into my skin, and sparkle even in low light. They’re big enough that they feel like proper earrings without being so big that they become statements in and of themselves.” – Ashley (Read more reviews.)

Lab Grown Options | Yes
Prices Starting At | $84 for a single stud
