Saunas offer many health benefits, including detoxifying our skin and boosting blood circulation. These are the best at-home saunas that are safe, energy-efficient, and cost-effective.
We have the Finnish to thank for developing saunas over 2,000 years ago. The enclosed rooms found in gyms and wellness spas are heated up to 195 degrees Fahrenheit (90 degrees Celsius), providing a relaxing environment for our minds and bodies. Saunas have physical health benefits, too; the heated environment is perfect for detoxing our skin and boosting blood circulation. We love the ritual of sitting and soaking in the heat so much that we’ve started browsing personal saunas we can use at home.
What are the benefits of a home sauna?
A home sauna can offer a relaxing way to support both physical and mental well-being without ever leaving the house. Regular sauna sessions may help ease muscle tension and soreness, improve circulation, promote relaxation, and support stress relief after a long day. Many people also enjoy saunas for their potential sleep and recovery benefits, especially after workouts or busy schedules. Beyond the wellness perks, having a sauna at home adds a spa-like experience and convenience, making it easier to build calming self-care rituals into your daily routine.
What are the differences between infrared, wet, and dry saunas?
Before you buy, here’s a quick sauna primer: Home saunas generally fall into two categories — infrared and traditional saunas, with traditional models further divided into dry and wet saunas. Traditional dry saunas heat the air using an electric or wood-burning heater, creating an intensely hot but low-humidity environment. Wet saunas, on the other hand, involve pouring water over heated rocks to create steam and increase humidity, resulting in the steamy atmosphere commonly associated with spas and Turkish baths.
Infrared saunas work differently by using infrared light waves to heat the body directly rather than heating the surrounding air. They typically operate at lower temperatures, making them feel more comfortable for people who find traditional saunas too intense. While there have been concerns about electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure in some infrared saunas, many modern models now offer low-EMF or EMF-blocking technology. There are also two main types of infrared heat: Far infrared, which is often associated with circulation and relaxation benefits, and near infrared, which penetrates more deeply and is commonly used for muscle recovery and skin support.
Overall, infrared saunas tend to be more energy-efficient, quicker to heat up, and more modern in design, while traditional dry and wet saunas offer a more classic, high-heat experience. Traditional saunas can reach temperatures up to 195°F (90°C), whereas infrared saunas typically max out around 140°F (60°C). When shopping for a home sauna, it’s worth comparing the heating method (wood-burning or electric), energy use, sauna size, and installation requirements to better understand ongoing electricity costs and which style best fits your space and wellness goals.
As for the upfront cost, while a home sauna is an investment, most of the brands below offer payment plans, free shipping, and extensive warranties. We also love the idea of DIYing an entire sauna on your own!

Our Editor’s Review | “If there’s one thing the brand absolutely delivers on, it’s the sweat — my 50-minute sessions at temperature levels five or six have me looking like a freshly glazed donut. The blanket starts out a little snuggly and then sweat starts to really kick in. While the brand encourages you to go in fully clothed in cotton (including socks), I prefer to go without clothing and instead cover everything up with cotton towels. (Oh, and don’t forget a pillow that you don’t mind getting head sweat on!).” – Emily McGowan, Editorial Director [Read our full review.]
